I recently bought a low milage '92 240sx fastback to replace the 5.0 Mustang I had before and what a difference!!!

The mustang was a pig compared to this car, and I make sure all of my american iron friends know it.

Now to the question...

Since I got the car I have been scouring the internet for parts and had convinced myself that an SR20DET was the way to go to find the best performance. But my bubble was burst when someone brought up emissions....

I live in Southern Oregon and my county is one of a few that requires emissions testing (and I might move to California). This pretty much kills my ideas for any JDM spec motor, I'm trying to figure how a turbo KA would fair against emissions.

Is there a 50 state legal turbo kit? Can I piece one together?Hybrid one from a 300z?

Any advice I can get would be a great help

--> sorry for the long post, I'm new <--

There's a lot of posts on this already, use the search function. From what I understand, you can lean the KA24DE (T) out in order to pass the sniffer part of the emissions. It depends on what your county does for emissions testing--if they do a visual inspection and a sniffer, then i don't think you'd pass the visual anyway, but if its just the sniffer, you have to make sure you tune it prior to having it tested in order to pass the test... I'm wondering the same thing about my state. (Connecticut) I have no idea if they do the sniffer and the visual inspection, but I know they bumped up all dates that our cars were supposed to be tested by about 4 months because they're changing the process of testin cars....if CT only does sniffer, I think that my car would be able to pass, (i have no cat) if they do the visual as well, I MIGHT pass, even though I don't have a cat, because s14's had a "dummy cat," just a hollowed out resonator that looks exactly like a cat.Marc

s14s have a cat at the bottom of the exhaust manifold. if you look at it there's a little bulge. i seriously doubt you'd be able to pass a sniffer without a cat.

thanks doctorj240 for the heads-up...if you looked at my sig, I have hotshot headers, so I'm damn well aware that the cat is at the bottom of the exhaust manifold...i figured that out when I removed the exhaust manifold and installed the headers...thats why I said the other one (which CAT BACK exhausts bolt up to) is a dummy cat.

trust me you wont pass. no chance.. i am in Mass, and trust me you wont. If you dont have a cat, there is no chance..unless one of your friends works at the emissions check station.

Thats not 100% :) All the automatic s14's Ive heard about (including mine) from 95 and 96 came with two. The hollow shell on the 5 speeds has a heat shield and is a cat on the slushies.

But the s13 should work in place of the second hollow one on yours if you are worried about it.

So lets say I replace that "fake" cat with a high-flow cat from RP or something, it will pass then, right?

I have recently passed B.C. emmisions with a KAT. It was a full dyno + idle test. I have the original stock cat (11 years old!) with a JWT ECU. I turned the boost down to 4 PSI for the test, but I don't think it had any effect at the load it was tested under.erich
