Someone I know in New Zealand owns this car. It's a base model jdm 97 s14 kouki with SR20DE. Obviously, with no turbo and smaller throttle body. Can he just install turbo and intercooler on this? He thinks that he will need to build it from bottom up such as replacing head gasket, piston rings, rods and pistons...etc. Isn't this SR20DE ready for turbo already? He thinks that he's better off swapping it with SR20DET. Anyone?

i'd say hes better off swapping. sr20de doesnt have oil squirters and the bottom SHOULD be built before attempting to add boost imho.

virtually any modern automobile engine is capable of accepting a turbo, but in this case the fact that it was the de block to begin with might/will hinder him down the road. check the rwd sr20 forum for more details.

the motor isnt turbo ready, i believe they have a high compression along the lines of 9.5 to 1, im guessing smaller injectors, ect.

I think it would be alot easier to buy a factory turbo SR than to build that one.

I think turboing that motor would be about the same deal as turboing a KA.

He can do it..He will just have to find a place to run he's oil and water lines for the turbo..Some bigger sr20t injectors,Fuel pump..And the NA sr's have a 9:5:1 comp over the 8:5:1 on the sr20det so he will not be running has much boost with the stock bottom end has he could with the sr20det..Thats about it.Oh yeah and no wonderful coilpack on NA's..

Thanks guys. I guess he's done his homework then. I don't know what he did, but the car has SE badge on the trunk and has a spoiler for the rear window.

The factory listing for an SR20DET (S13 just for simplicity) is 205 I believe. That would be at the camshaft I think since thats usually how factory ratings go. If every part you had to add was the exact OEM SR20DET part, it would still net you less than that (maybe 190-200 cam hp, and would probably have heat/lubrication issues. The reason the KA is so tolerant of high boost is partially that its a truck motor, so its build like a freaking bunker.

Its going to be a lot easier to turbo any KA than it would an SR20DE. KA compression is already better suited if I'm not mistaken. As a matter of fact, I'm almost positive people can sucessfully run relatively low boost setups on KAs without any internal modifications whatsoever to the engine.

Its an S14 SRDE so the compression ratio is 10.1:1. If he really wants to go turbo, then swap in a DET otherwise he won't be running more than a few psi if that before detonation. Im running the same engine in my S13. The swap should be done as soon as wiring specialties sends me my harness back.

If your buddy, does end up replacing the head gasket, why doesnthe go with a much thicker gasket to lower the compression a little?

sr20de has a 60mm throttle body and the sr20det has a 50mm throttle body. i actually upgraded my sr20det to the throttle body from a NA.

IMO the sr20de should be rebuilt if it is going to be put under boost. although, a ka24de from someone over here would just be a few hundred + shipping if he wanted to not have to rebuild to boost and not dump money on an sr20det.
