i have to replace the turbo inlet gasket and was wondering wether it was necessary to remove the manifold to get to it. i have racheting renches so hopefully they can reach those tight spaces

If you're talking about the turbine inlet, you're gonna have to pull the manifold off. The rear two nuts are impossible to get otherwise. Ratcheting gear wrenches are impossible to fit on them due to the tight clearances, not to mention the evil lock tabs are in the way. Also, you'll appreciate having the manifold off the turbo so you can be certain you won't drop the turbo when it comes free of the studs.

what are these lock tabs ive heard so much about?

They're little metal tabs that are slid over the studs. Then once you tighten your nut all the way down, you bend the tab up to hold the nut in place. It keeps them from vibrating loose. Which definitely happens if you don't put the tabs back on.
