What exactly is the purpose of a turbo extention?

Congradulations, you have posted in the wrong forum.

But the turbo extention is pretty much another name for an O2 housing. It is the short pipe that comes out of the exhaust housing that the O2 sensor plugs into. The stock pipe is very restrictive, that is why many people buy these aftermarket ones to free up the airflow. This results in more power and faster spool.

Sort of off topic but does the greddy extension come with any gaskets?

Hmm, I just ordered one a couple days ago, hopefully it comes with both so I won't have to buy them seperately :)

I got the genuine Greddy and I have nothing to compare it to as I did it at the same time as my swap. But I've heard from others with SR's that it helps with spooling and is ALOT less restrictive than the stock elbow. I would be weary about the knock offs. There have been clearance issues with the steering rack. I got Nismo mounts so the engine sits a little higher than usual. It would've cleared anyway but it would of been alot closer.

Yeah I've heard the HKS elbows have issues clearing the steering. Anyone confirm this? The Greddy ones are the ones that I've heard that fit with no problems. The above posts confirms what I've heard about that one.

it's not a big issue. couple wacks is all it takes to make it clear. thats with the USDM engine mounts that sit a bit lower then ni$mo.there's a write-up on it here

The guys at garage works said they have installed a knock off elbow and it took a lot more than a couple of whacks. When they fianlly got it in it ended up mangling the elbow so bad you might a well have kept the stock one. Just pay the $200 and get the Greddy. No worries.

maybe they didn't have the engine sitting right after the swap or something. if you look at the write up from my previous post...thats 2 whacks worth of dent there. i personally did the whacking. the piece is hardly deformed.also the benefit of the unit i got is from the seperated wastegate/exhaust section in addition to size.

the turbo extension also comes with a splitter that separates the normal exhaust flow from the wastegate flow.. so it reduces turbulance and helps the flow even more..or someting like that.. the guy who installed myne was telling me about it...
