ok here we go. So I have a Disco Potato/gt28rs, i finally get in the car, after a 6 months seating in my house, i used the taka lines lines with the stock banjo fitting bolt from the stock black top sr, my car smokes, big time, bluish smoke burning oil, brand new turbo, i havent driven the car i just started and it smokes so no miles into the turbo yet, here's what i think could be happening, im not sure so guys please help

first time i got the car together it smoked, i took the turbo out and it was the oil return line, it was kinked, so I thought the problem was fixed, but guess what, it whasn't. I'm using the stock bolt which is suppost to be a restrictor but i think the lines have a restrictor too, or is it just so you can use the stock restrictor bolt?

zerothread?id=182047

I was reading an article on markemark article the one above, and i thought that my probrem was similar, so i keep searching and i find another article saying that new garret turbos come with a restrictor built into the turbo, so now markemark said that turbo seal falure is becouse not enoght oil goes into the turbo, could that be it, the opposite problem that i had before, with my oil return line kinked?, could my problem be that im using a stock sr banjo bolt restrictor, the lines may have a restrictor in them too, and the turbo has a restrictor too? wtf.

thats 2 or 3 restrictors im not sure, shoul i run the car with no restrictor at all or may be is put back together right, but my turbo seal is bad, which i believe i would need a new turbo because they are not serviseble, that's 1100 dollars that i paid for the turbo f****, im so upset and pissed off, please help before i star braking sh**.

What size oil supply line are you running? Is the turbo a ball-bearing unit?

the oil line that im runing is the one from the taka lines, the turbo its a gt28rs disco potato dual ball bearing, im just confused if the problem is happening because of not enought oil, having two restrictors (stock bolt, and turbo) or is because is too much oil, or my seals have gone bad, this will mean buying another turbo, 1000 dollars again. help a brother out.

I'm assuming both restrictors are passive in that they just use a small orafice to limt flow. If that's the case, the flow will be limited only by the smallest restrictor. The only way a series of restrictors can cause a lower pressure than simply the smallest restrictor is if was somehow based on the in/out pressure ratio. It would be too complicated a feature to put in either a turbo or banjo bolt.

Bear in mind that brand new turbos are prone to smoking slightly the first time you start it up. Shouldn't be much, but make sure it;s not that. A good heat-up cycle should get rid of it though. Just some light oil film from production needs to burn off.

Other than that, I'd make sure to check out the usual suspects(bad seal, too much pressure, return line restriction).

All GT turbos are ball bearing units.

That is incorrect. The GT32 is NOT ball bearing. According to Garrett, the "R" in a turbo ID signature is what determines the ball bearing feature.

R = Roller Bearing RS= Double Ball Bearing

I would still think that GT32 is Ball Bearing, but I think GT is just the new generation.

As Chris @ AMS has already stated (and many others on this board) the GT32 is NOT ball bearing.

Also, thank you for the R and RS denotation. I wasn't quite clear on the exact purpose of the two letters, only that an R was a ball bearing.

I didn't know about GT turbos not all being ball bearing. Learn something new everyday. =)
