This isn't specifically a turbo KA or even a 240SX specific question persay; but this seemed the best place to ask it being that people here are the ones that are most likely to be purchasing new turbos. Regardless, my friend recently had the turbo rebuilt on his 280ZX (by rebuilt, I mean replaced with an entirely new CHRA). Is there a break-in requirement for this (like on a new engine) or can he hammer it right off the bat? How many miles should he (or anyone with a new turbo for that matter) go easy on the turbo? and how many RPMs is considered easy?

drive it for a full tank of gas shifting at 3,000 rpms

it is supposed to help the gaskets and such adjust, and yes, its necessary as far as i know

i have never heard of any break in at all....

what does the RPM of the engine have to do with the turbo?

I don't come over here to much, not much of a Turbo KA guy and now that its picking up. : ) I have only ever heard of breaking in an engine, I don't think anything is REQUIRED, but I also haven't asked. : ) I probably wouldn't go to hard on it till the system had run thru for a little while.

As far as the RPM of the engine, I'd say that would have to do with the spool of the turbo. : ) Sheesh Adam. : )

ADAMHU:ok, heres how it works. when an engine revs at higher RPM's, it is working harder. making more heat, more power, more wear on the engine, using more gasoline. if you have just installed a brand new part that adds about 50hp, its assumed that the system will take some time to adjust.

if you just got a heart transplant, would you run a marathon the next day?

thats MY reasoning. i know after you port and polish and rebuild an engine, you HAVE to break it in.NO questions about that

an engine yes, but the original question was about breaking in a turbo. i'm no expert on turbos, but i don't see why you would need to break one in.

It wouldn't hurt, would it?
