Well as some of you know i finally got my CA up and running. However, after driving it for 20 minutes the turbo blew and i honestly dont know why. After double checking everything over and over (leaks ect.) me and my friend decided to take it for a test ride to see how it turned out.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WE DID NOT GET THE RPMS ABOVE 4500 AT ALL.

The first 15 minutes were fine, drove it around the block once, and then took it back to his garage and checked again for any leaks or whatever. Next we decided to ride up to the local gas station and filled the car up. After driving 2 miles back home my friend and i noticed a squeel and then faint thud sound?? (BARELY NOTICABLE IF YOU WERENT LISTENING HARD ENOUGH)Immediatly he said my turbo had just crapped out on me. We kept going because his house is only 1/4 mile up the road at this point and the whole way there is smoke coming from the back.

When we finally got back we noticed that the smoke was not smoke but steam???He said that maybe the coolant that cools that turbo was getting thrown on the manifold somehow and causing the steam??

However the weird part was that there were no leaks whatsoever, the car was not running hot at all, nothing.

My friend assumes that somehow rust from the turbo seized up the turbo somehow, but i truely have no idea what is wrong. The engine runs perfect, but the turbo is just blown.

IMPORTANT INFO:

The front clip was bought with a blown turbo, and after taking it out of the clip we took off the oil pan and noticed that the oil pick up for the turbo was clogged, and immediatly assumed that was why the turbo was bad on it.

After cleaning everything up we put on a used T25 i bought off the forums a while back that looked like it was in good shape and no shaft play at all. However the turbo had been sitting in his carport for half a year before we put it on the engine.

After everything was sorted out we turned it over and let it run for 10 min intervals, probably like 5 times over the next 3 days while we were changing the rear end. Ran perfect and reved it a couple times no problem.

My question is what the hell caused it to crap out on me for no reason, after taking all precautions available and not even driving it hard????

ANYONE WITH IDEAS PLEASE LET ME KNOW

THANK YOU

It seems like every turbo that sits goes bad. Happened to me like 3 times.

There could be quite a few things that messed it up. The turbos don't actually blow though. The little metal seals actually push apart. I had to learn it somewhat from watching a freind rebuild turbos at forced performance. Too much oil pressure can cause it some times. A kink in the oil return line can cause it. There's all kinds of reasons. Check your lines again that's the only thing I could think of.

I'm gonna be hard pressed to believe that the turbo blew in such a way as to introduce coolant into the exhaust. If I understand how the are constructed correctly, the only way that could happen would have to have the cast iron center section fail in such a way as to allow the coolant into the oil. I've never heard of this happening.

Are you sure it's steam? Just because it's not black/blue, doesn't mean it's not oil. The way that oil will leak past the seal can actually allow the oil to burn very clean.

Regardless, I would say the reason that it failed is because it sat for so long out in the elements. I would assume that it rusted up internally and that caused the failure.

when i got my car running initially i didnt make it to the end of my street (~700ft) before the turbine wheel made contact with the housing and just ruined everything. it happens, i wouldnt worry about it much.
