I have been told by my local transmission shop that my turbine sensor on my ’97 J30 is likely bad. I took it to them as the transmission does not seem to want to kick down. It will hold 3rd gear even when accelerating at 15 mph. Seems to up-shift just fine, just wont downshift when it should. It also kicks out of overdrive every time you let off the gas at highway speed.

So i have already replaced the revolution sensor on the back of the transmission with no improvement. Fluid was change 15k ago and is still in good condition.

So I took it to the mechanic and now they tell me the turbine sensor is faulty and reading out of spec. They quoted me $512 to replace it. It might fixit and it might not they told me. But most likely that should fix it.

My question is this. How hard is it to replace if I did it myself? Does it require removal of the transmission or a total tear down of the trans. Any idea how much the part alone would cost?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know for a fact that my transmission is perfectly fine, yet does this as well. Its extremely annoying but I think its just how they were designed. As for the turbine sensor, ha sorry but youre on your own.

Adjusting the TPS should solve the kickdown issue.

go up into the Do it yourself sticky at the top of this forum and there are instructions for the Auto transmission built in self test. That will tell you what component is failing

How do i adjust the TPS on a '97? I have tried to take a reading as i read that it needs to be at .5V fully closed and 4V at full throttle per the factory service manual.

There are two plug in's on the driver side throttle body. An upper(brown) and a lower(grey). Which one do you take the reading with a multimeter when adjusting?

There is also 3 wires running into the back of each of the plug. which wires do you take the voltage from? On the upper there is a orange, black and green wire. On the lower, a Blue, green and red wire.

Sorry if this is covered in another thread. Did a search, but could only find the one below. Still can't fully figure it out.

the lower connector is where you measure the ohms.I have a consult so its a tad easier to adjust. But it can be done with a well calibrated Ohm Meter.Get a 1 ohm resistor to test your meter. Its a very precise adjustment.
