I need to replace the turbine revolution sensor on my 1997 J30t as it tested bad and the trans is not shifting correctly. I know that is located on top of the transmission bell housing. My question is this.

Can the sensor be replaced without lowering the transmission? The factory service manual states that you must lower the trans which requires disconnect of the exhaust and removal of the radiator. Has anyone completed the task without lowering it? Any tips for completing the job?

Thanks for the help.

There is no other way to do it. You have to lower the transmission.

I have no experience with the J30 and am probably off-base but.... when I had the turbine revolution sensor replaced in my Q45, same location- top of the bell housing, the FSM said to disconnect the drive shaft, loosen the engine mounts, remove the transmission mount and disconnect the exhaust pipe in order to tilt the transmission down to install the sensor.

On a lift in the shop, the mechanic was able to reach up with a ratchet wrench and loosen the one bolt holding the sensor in place with no other disassembly as described above. It probably wouldn't be as easy laying on your back under the J. I was expecting to have to pay about 4 hours labor (I supplied the part) but it only took the mechanic about 30 minutes. Cheap fix for an annoying problem.

The moral of the story is that the FSM is not always correct.

um i know this is a lot late but was searching to see and remember what part i hod got. i was able to replace the part in the parking lot at school with jack stands. didnt have to remove exhaust or drop trans. hardest part was getting the bolt to thread back in because the spacing is cramped for your hand to maneuver in easily.

Writer of factory service manual must have been offered payola to state transmission must be dropped etc from infiniti dealers just to pad labor charges to customers........exhaust does not need to be disconnected either......they want to make a simple 30 minute job into multiple billable hour job.....plenty of examples of this in fsm procedures

Patience is golden when trying to do stuff like this.
If there's a will there's a way !!
Thanks for the input Qship96.
I will be attempting this maneuver in the next few weeks.
