I hear the term "tuning" alot with turboed engines...

What exactly do you do to tune your car with a new turbo/injectors etc etc. Do you actually have to be on a dyno to tune your car or can you just do it with SAFC or any fuel management system?

Well typically you use a wideband O2 sensor in conjunction with a dyno so you can see what your air/fuel ratios are at certain RPMS. Then you used a fuel controler to optimize the fuel curve. Too rich you loose power, to lean you blow up the motor.

Hmm i see so basically when they say Tuning they mean tuning your a/f ratio with a fuel controller...

Is is absolutely necessary to use a wideband o2 sensor and a dyno or can you just use a fuel controller to tune your motor to say 11~12:1 ratio?

you really need a wideband 02 sensor to tune it properly. an AFC would be a good starting point if your on a budget, but better if you have a stand alone. you can get away with a dyno, if you can drive your car in an empty long road and tune it a/f from there.
