I was wondering where those of you who know how to tune learned how to do it? I've been reading up for a while on things like the Apexi S-AFC, Standalone systems, etc-- and they all seem to be similar in that they allow (highly qualified, I assume) people to essentially tune every action the engine makes. I was wondering what kind of knowledge is necessary for the S-AFC as far as basic tuning: fixing rough idles and whatnot..

I understand tuning is a complicated thing- for some it is even their profession- so dont get all huffy about this- Im just askin about where I can learn the BASICS of tuning. Once I've learned about that, maybe then I'll be interested in ACTUALLY tuning an engine.

Also, any thoughts on the S-AFC would be appreciated. It seems to be the standard for fuel/air managment. Are there any good alternatives?

Thanks guys

the only way to tune a s-afc is on the dyno...don't let anyone tell you different. on that, u can either lose hp, or gain it. on the dyno last month, we gained 30whp on my friend's b18c5 turboed civic just by dyno-tuning it. i mean, by some miracle, u may have it right...but how will u always know?? u know? dyno it...make sure the person dynoing it knows what the hell they're doing. i recommend Balanced Performance (ED is the dyno-tuner). he knows his stuff. they are in Atlanta, GA...anywhere elsei dunno.~Scott

i disagree, the majority of the people who go with an AFC and the majority of people who use the afc dont use a dyno...of course a dyno isnt a bad thing, but not necessary.....The safc can be tuned on the street. I recommend haveing a A/F gauge, and an EGT gauge to monitor temps while tuning it...

Adjusting the S-AFC is easy, but finding out what the best setting is will take some time. I have one in my car and I tuned it just by doing some runs on a nice flat long road and feeling the difference in power. It's just like a dyno but you don't get the numbers so you have to go by the feel of the car. You should know your car well enough to know what is better or worse. What are you running in your car that would require you to have an S-AFC? I have no need for one but I got mine for $100 so I couldn't pass up that deal.
