Hello everyone!

Just got my ride back from the shop. I am so excited I can hardly stay still!

96 240SX:-Greddy TD06 Turbo kit (6PSI)-Greddy FMIC Kit-Greddy Type S BOV

This is my first turboed car and I just need some reassurance that it's running properly and perhaps tuning tips if it's not....

1. BOOST - The boost kicks in about 5k RPM in first gear, but does it at 3500 on second and subsequent gears. Is this normal? Can someone that have the same setup confirm this?

2. EMANAGE - I know about the idling problems with the Greddy Kits, but got confused after reading the emanage posts. Would buying a Profec E01 be a waste of time since the emanage came password protected? Or can I just buy a support tool and plug the emanage to my computer?

3. COMPRESSOR SURGE - This may sound kinda dumb but I have no idea what compressor surge sounds like. Is it the studdering sound I heard when I close the throttle? The people that installed the turbo said it's the sound of the wastegate, but I'd like to make sure.

4. BOV - There's a delay before the BOV opens after I let off the throttle. And the sound of the Type S sounds like drawn out high pitched screech that lasts for like 3 seconds! I've read that this is normal for the BOV, can someone confirm this?

1. In first gear I reach full boost around 3500-4000 rpm. In other gears its around 3000.

2. You won't be able to tune your car by yourself. You will have to go to a greddy authorized tuner that has the password to the emanage. Or you can tune the emanage from scratch, which I will probably do in the next few weeks. If you go that route then it is definitely not a waste of time to buy the e-01 or the support tool.

3. It's the sound when the throttle closes and the air flows backwards to the compressor. This is why you bought a blowoff valve. It relieves the pressure built up in the i/c pipes when the throttle is closed.

4. You are right about the type s. It's a high pitched sneeze sound.

Hey thanks for the quick reply doctorj240, I've been following your thread about the kit install.

I'm going to get the Profec E01 and try my luck with that.

My dealer says that Greddy doesn't supply the passwords to dealers. They wanted to tune on of the honda kits. They ended up deleting and starting from scratch.

If anyone knows the passwords please post!

i make boost late in 1st also. i belive its jsut from less load on the engine. its kinda hard to tell when i make boost tho cuz 1st revs so fast (fidanza flywheel and enjuku aluminum driveshaft)

Just came back from the dyno, 194 rwhp and 214 ft-lbs torque @ 2100ft with my current setup.

Looks like I'm going to have to get the e-01 and start from scratch. I'll update when I start tuning.

It's impossible to have compressor surge except when you have positive pressure after the compressor. Compressor surge occurs when the motor can not ingest as much air as the turbo wants to put out at a given pressure ratio. This is what happens when you close the throttle under boost and the turbo is still spinning while the motor is taking in nearly no air at all. The other way this tends to happen is by using too small a turbine with too large a compressor for a given motor. The turbine will spool the turbo quickly, but that would land the plot on a compressor map in front of the surge line. The compressor can not provide that low an airflow at that boost level, so the air tries to force it's way back out through the compressor. If there is no air pressure behind the turbo compressor, it won't be trying to go through the compressor backwards. So no boost, no surge...

I would love to see your dyno chart

Ok, just got the e01 installed. Here are some pictures of what it looks liked along with the Greddy turbo kit.

And here are the dyno charts. I messed around with the gamma on the pictures so they're a little clearer.

I'd make sure everything is connected and sealing properly. You should be making closer to about 220 HP. I doubt the tuning will be so far off to cause a 30 HP loss.

Did anyone else dyno the Greddy Kit? Please post results if there are.

C-Kwik: What kind of setup do you have? You're tuning with the emanage also right? Any general pointers on how to tune it?

I think the guy is at 2200 elevation, but your right it shouldn't be a 30 hp loss.

Oh yeah, thanks red, curve looks great, gotta love those mitsu turbo's, compare it to the xs kit wich has a t04, nasty spikehttp://www.turbomagazine.com/t...m.jpghttp://w ... /t...m.jpg

I have the XS Engineering Kit, and yes, I am using an E-Manage.

Tuning was rather simple. I only used the injector correction feature to account for my 370 cc injectors. Doing this, I heard no detonatoin until I ran it on a really hot day. I backed off timing using the E-Manage slightly at higher RPM's and TPS voltages. No detonation since.

I suggest highly that you try and work with the preprogrammed map as much as possible. Rule out other possibilities that might cause a low HP figure. I spoke with Mike Chung, who is a Greddy R&D guy and owns a 240sx at SEMA and I'm sure he made sure the programming was somewhat decent. If the E-Manage mapping is losing you 30 HP, then something has to be seriously off with the mapping.

When I dyno'd a few months ago, I'm fairly certain I had a boost leak. The torque curve looked great up until about 3500 RPM, where it then dropped a bit, spiked, then declined.

Try making sure all your pipe connections are tight. Make sure you use a socket and not just a screwdriver. Intakes on NA motors hardly need hose clamps. Boosted motors need them and they need to be tight.

c-kwik, what turbo are you using? the charts I posted are of the xs kit but it doesn't see any boost til 3700

T04B. I did swap this one in for the one that came with the XS kit. The turbine specs are the same except I'm runnint a .69 A/R instead of .58. And my compressor is a slightly lower trim. I think the XS dyno is not quite accurate. I think they stomped on the gas around where they torque curve starts its upslope. They probably didn't start recording until just after they stomped on the gas. My dyno shows a much more gradual rise in torque.

Alright. I managed to find the time to run the car a few times and I found out that at stock boost settings it gets to about 5.5 psi of boost @ 4000 in 3rd gear and 5.7 @ 3700 in 4th. I don't even see 6psi until midway through 5th gear! Messing with the boost settings improved the spool time much more though.

What's weird is that after I imported the original maps from the emanage, the 370cc injectors weren't programmed in. I made the corrections and acceleration during low throttle stutters.

I'm gonna recheck the connections again just to make sure. Hopefully it's just something loose.

Where do you get your e-manage??? early on, doctorj240 said that it has password protected? how did you tune it?

thanks!

I got it from http://www.mohdparts.com/emanage/

Only the E-Manage that comes with their turbo kits are password protected. They have pre-programmed maps that Greddy does not want to see used unless you have their kit. You can password protect your map on E-manage once you've tuned it. But ultimately, if you wanted, you can reset the E-Manage and it will clear the password protect and the maps on it. You would have to tune from scratch if you did though.
