So, I just hit 145K miles on my bone stock '92. It also just so happens that I have acquired around $300 to do a mass tune up of the old thing. I've seen the post titled 'Car runs like new...' and that gave me some ideas about where I'm going to go with my tune up....

So far, I have chosen the following items:

Pinnacle Nissan/Infiniti items(ALL OEM) (from the side banner):(1) Oxygen sensor(1) Fuel Filter(1) Distributor Cap(1) Distributor Rotor(1) Ignition CoilNGK.com items:(4) NGK GP platinum plugs(1) NGK Premium wire setMidwayautosupply.com items:(3) Sea Foam Auto Marine Motor Treatment, 16 fl. oz.(1) Sea Foam Deep Creep Penetrating Cleaner, 12 oz. Total price: $339.30

Of course I'm going to follow up with finally switching to a synthetic oil/synth. oil filter and am going to flush/refill the transmission and the coolant.

I'm not too sure about that ignition coil, however. It is a very pricey item ($140) and I'm not quite sure that I really need it. Any wisdom on the subject? Also, is there anything else I should get, or consider buying, to make this a worthwile tune-up? I don't really have any major problems with her, besides the timing chain being a little rattley (a separate issue) and that the rear main seal appears to have a small leak.

Anyway, thanks in advance for the responses!

I am not going to say a DAMN thing about apc in this post. Its better that way. But alot in a future post hehe.

You dont need platinum plugs, guy. And anything you put in your engine has to come out again (in some form). So save the oxygen sensor for when you need it, like a few weeks after you put in the seafoam when the other one clogs up.

Ignition coil is only needed if your spark is tested to be weak.

Pshh, APC is good stuff ;)

What I planned on doing was:Getting SeaFoam,Putting one bottle in the gas tank, with the methods mentioned in Thor's post,Putting one bottle in the crankcase oil,Then doing the brake booster method, 3 times.

After that I'd probably be forced to replace the oxygen sensor and definitely the plugs, because I'm sure they havent been changed in a couple of years.

Oh, and about the plugs:The 'Traditional spark plug' from NGK is $2.24 a pop, and the 'GP Platinum' is only $2.68 a pop...I always thought platinum was best for plugs, but I could be mistaken.

Armored Personell Carriers are indeed good stuff.

and I'm gonna believe that to be what your name is even if it isn't.

platinum can't hurt though.

my car factory had double platinum, which it currently runs. I've hear of them not running well at all with anything less. granted, the KA didn't require them factory, but I don't really see how it's gonna hurt even if he wants to run them. Just don't bother with some dumb splitfire or goofy bosch stuff, stick with Autolite or NGK.

Also, I decided to replace all of the engine belts (5 total, from Napaonline.com) ringing in another $50. I probably should replace some hoses too, but I dont know which hoses those would be.

Well I use NGK Copper Plugs... reason, Copper conducts electricity better then platinum... aren't platinum and iridium plugs are just for longevity? Silverstong plugs (by nology) with pure silver core is supposedly the best plugs because silver is the best metal for conducting electricity. Well anyway, correct me if I'm wrong.

Cause they aren't in a 240 :DProbably some strange layout that puts the plugs in an unreachable place that allows you to do like 1 turn at a time all while contorting your hand in ways you never knew you could. That might make it take 6 hours, given several breaks to allow hand cramps to pass :oface

conductivity of copper is only better than platinum only if the platinum hasn't been purified to 99.9% which is readily attainable. After that, platinum has better conductivity than gold, only problem is that it costs a fortune. Platinum and Iridium are more durable than the copper stuff. The iridium plugs in my sisters corolla come oem and need replacement once every 100k. The NGK iridium's I've installed won't need replacement until the motor itself needs a major overhaul. I also bought my plugs from PDM and only cost 5 bucks a plug. So in the long term, I'll actually be spending less to replace copper plugs versus just one set of iridiums not to mention the convenience factor.

Id just redline the car a few times, unless you plan on replacing plugs/wires with it...

after ALL the smoke gets out of your engine, I'd replace o2 sensor, and probably plugs too.

yeah, I gotta snake through IC pipes and a really tight engine bay...

then actually move my hand enough and get a ratchet in there then put the wires back on....

look at a pic under the hood of an SC sometime, its scary.

do you have misterious ticking noise in your top end with those plugs in the car... while i was in iraq my boy put those platnum pluse eleventybillion or whatever plugs in...they fouled quickly an i cant even figure ouut how to check the gap....so i put some normal auto lite plugs in and the clicking went away......i was like hell yeah cause i was gonna tear open the head to find that noise.

my experience bosh plus whatever=garbage

Ugh, when i put the Bosch Platinum +4's in my '90 Hatchback, i ripped them back out in under 100 miles, and took them straight back to Autozone...got a refund, and put in the +2's....still only ran about as good as the NGK's that had been in it for who knows how long

NO MORE BOSCH IN IMPORTS!

I run the NGK iridiums in my CA. I wouldn't bother with that coil unless you know it's bad. Hell, I've got two used ones that I know are good that I'll send you for just the cost of shipping, if it'll save you getting raped for $140. You should buy a 300zx fuel filter too, it's a bit cheaper and flows slightly better.
