Ok, time for a newbie question. I would like to perform my own tune-up and this would be my second DIY, the first was replacing the Bose head unit. I an unsure as to what exactly gets replaced in a tune-up. I know its the spark plugs, air filter, and gas fitler. Not sure what else I should do. I have owned my 93 J30t for almost 2 years and have done nothing except brakes and oil changes. I would like to begin taking better care of my baby and wanted any help you guys could offer. I am creeping up on 97k miles, and would like to service accordingly. The car has only small problems, and hopefully this servicing would put her back on top. Sorry the long post and thanks in advance.

P.S. Maybe some BG 44k would do some justice as well??

Car: should be obvious enough

if it hasnt been done, throw a new timing belt in there. You should also really look into doing full exchange of fluids and pan drop/filter change for that transmission.

I had all 3 belts replaced a few months ago as my car used to screech like a banshee. :) I was thinking of getting the transmission service kit from infinitipartsusa.com.

transmission service kit is a good idea.

i am not talking about your 3 accessory belts. there are 3 exterior belts: for AC, alternator, and power steering. Your timing belt does not let you know that it needs to be replaced until it breaks and you have valve/piston contact and you need several thousands of dollars of work at a dealer.

Since you are nearing 100k, you should really get on replacing it, especially since it is likely you dont have the kevlar reinforced one on late 93+ models.

it is the biggest item of preventative maintenance besides the transmission.

VimyJ, how much of this stuff is doable by a newbie such as a myself?? I know some of the stuff is in the Service Manual, but not sure about all of it.

I'm confident you could do it all if you have any experience working on cars. You'll need the right tools to do it correctly and SAFELY. jack stands, torque wrench, complete metric set, ratcheting wrenches will save you TONS of time. You'll need a good weekend or two and good instructions and it could be done.
