My car is a 1990 nissan 240sx, and currently im having problems, when i put the key in the ignition it want budge, it has a little play in it and when u move it up a little it makes the chime noise. Nissan wants 150 for the tumbler and ignition switch, and a mechanic i talked to said there is no way i could find a tumbler for a nisssan 240sx in a junkyard, he said it would be like 60 bux to install but if anyone else knows any other fix to this or anyway i could rig this up till i get my next paycheck that would be great. I think its called the tumbler the thing u put ur key into. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

spray some penetrating lube in there and wiggle the hell out of it , also rock your steering wheel back and forth while you try to turn it it may come loose and turn, also is your car an auto matic or manual?

electrically you could get the car started if you pulled the switch off the back of the ignition lock. the problem though is the steering lock is disengauged by the key being turned.

you would have to remove the actual ignition lock assembly. you need a hammer and a punch to do this. The lock is held to the coloum with breakaway bolts. The heads of the bolts break off when it is installed so its not easy to steal your car. if you pull your coloum covers off and look down on the lock cyl over the coloum shaft you will see 2 rivit looking heads in a whole on either side of the coloum in the lock cyl's body. Those are the bolts. you need to get about half way betwen the middle of the dome and its outer edge with your punch and hammer it in an unscrewing fashion. you do this untill the bolt is loose enough you can turn it by pushing the tip of your finger against it and rotating it out. do the same with the second one except to make it easier to unscrew, once your break it loose with the punch squeez the 2 peices of the lock cyl together while you use your finger to unscrew it. This takes the hanging weight of the lock cyl off the screw so its easier to rotate.

once its off remove the phillips screw holding the electrical part on the lock cyl. now you can simply use a screw driver to start and drive your car.
