For those who heard of this great wave on sunday, than you know what's going on. An earthquake in the 9.0 richter scale hit off the coasts of Indonesia, sending a great wave over that country, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, pakistan, and Thailand. It's expected to hit the 60K figure in the next couple of days. Indonesia's death toll alone was 27k people. I really hope these countries can cope w/such catastrophe...

Yeah that's insane. The toll was at 22,000 yesterday and I was already saying damn to that...man I feel for what they're going through.

Terrifying.

While they're losing everything they own, drowning is filth and sewage, searching for loved ones they'll likely never find, we're eating way too much good food, unwrapping expensive gifts we probably don't really need, and reveling in the excesses of our enormous blessings.

Give thanks for what we have, and say a prayer for those suffering in Southeast Asia.

55,000 dead, but don't forget that millions are now homeless. This is huge. It's going to take a long time for them to recover from this. Why doesn't stuff like this happen here in California? We probably deserve it.

most of those coutries are prity poor too and i know they also rely heavily on tourism for their economy. i know Puket (sp?) in tailand got completely destroyed. that was one of their nicest beach resort areas.

That's a terrible, terrrible thing. As they begin to re-build it's the little things.

It may seem like a simple thing, but take any old eye glasses you have to your local Lions Club or LensCrafters as they both participate in missions that take used eye glasses to people in 3rd world countries including Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and the Philippines. The people that lost all their possesions may not be able to see to start re-building their world.

Please donate your used eye glasses.

Wow, that's terrible, the first time I saw the number was in the newspaper at like 12,000, then I got online and it said 22,000 and now it's 55,000. That thing must've been massive.

Tsunami Reaches death toll of 55000 and climbing. Bush declares war on ocean, 80% of Naval reserves called active for full scale invasion.

Trust me, he'd do it...

Last month I went out into the middle of nowhere (California Valley/ Carrizo Plain), went off the main road, and drove up and over the San Andreas Fault. I parked on top for a while, and just marveled at the potential power.

When it comes down to it, we have no control (excpet for what we do to the environment).

I was listening to Larry King on XM 2 days ago and he had a caller on there saying it can happen on the California coast, and in fact has. He said there was a tsunami that started along the Alaska coast and worked its way down and killed a few dozen people along the Oregon and California coasts.

Man a 9.0 earthquake too...can you imagine that on land here in Cali? Seismologists keep saying the big one is coming eventually. I believe it's just a matter of time. I mean look at the Loma Prieda earthquake that hit here in the bay area and nearly destroyed the Bay Bridge and took out an entire freeway. And that was only a 6.8?

I can't remember the specifics, because I caught the end of the documentary, but there was an earthquake in Alaska that caused avalanches and mud/rock slides to suddenly drop into the ocean. IIRC, there was a wall of water inside a cove that reached around 200 feet. I'll have to search for more info, cause I could be way off.

I remember seeing that too, i think it was on the discovery channel or TLC, they analyzed the dynamics of how landslides create high energy waves. The point of the documentary, IIRC, was about a ship that sunk in that lagoon.

Actually, you jogged my memory a little more. IIRC, The boat rode the giant wall of water, grounded on a hillside a 1/4 mile from the water, and the guys lived. I think this was a quake in Alaska ~1964. I might be mixing two different events though. I need to start searching google. Maybe tomorrow.

People forget to factor in the amount of people disease will kill over there. Those countries have poor sanitation. All that sewage and trash will be hazardous, and they don't have access to alot of clean water too.

ya...they say there is an island of the cost of africa that is mostly filled with water. if the volcano on the island erupts and its large enough to cause the part of the mountain to fall into the atlantic, they say it will cause i tsunami to hit the east coast reaching 20miles inland.

it was on discovery
