The speakers are not working properly in my Q45 and I am confused on what to buy that is compatible with what is in there. Can I purchase just any Bose automobile speakers or is there something specific that I need to get? Please help!!!

You can't buy amps out of another type of car, at least and get the same results, because the amps are equalized specifically for the car they're installed in. So your pool of replacements would be only certain years of Q45s.

Your amps are probably bad, which is a very very common issue. Each speaker has it's own independent amplifier... so you would have to have each one repaired.

Or contact Bose directly - the last time I did this was in 2002 so the number may have changed - but the one I have on file is 1-800-231-2673 or 508-879-7330. When you send them to Bose you have the added benefit of getting new speakers as well as amps.

Your car may possibly have been in a recall for replacement of the rear amps - so you would want to check with the dealership to see if they have already been replaced (and then failed again) - if not, you get two of the four free!

The other option is to gut the whole thing... new radio, new speakers, etc - and ditch the whole Bose system - but unless you're dissatisfied with the factory system it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Welcome to NICO!

Infiniti would really replace a set of speakers from a 1992 car?

If the Bose speakers are shot, you can replace them with aftermarket head unilt and speakers as cheap as you want or as nice as you want to spend. For $300 installed you could get something decent, but I'd think you'd end up spending more for something nicer. I never finish off an aftermarket setup until I have good speakers, IPOD connection, MP3 playback, powerful amp, and that ends up sounding way better than Bost setup (especially a 92' Q but is $1200 worth of stuff with install).

Well, Infiniti will sell you a $500-$800 speaker/amp box. Bose will rebuild the amps and replace the drivers.

Yes... it was a safety recall. Apparently a few amps caught on fire. Infiniti said it was a defect in the amp, Clarion/Bose said it was a leaky rear glass seal... but ultimately they just recalled all of them for free amp replacements.

That recall only covered up to '92, right? Too bad, as I've lost a front and rear amp. The rear in particular made some disturbing noises until I promptly disconnected it.

I think the recall was just 1990 and 1991.

I have the complete system from my '92 that I want out of my garage. The front amps are no good. The rear speakers & amps were the recall replacements and are perfect. The head unit works perfect but a few of the radio station pre-set buttons' light bulbs don't work. Shipping from Sumas, WA plus a case of beer (beer costs $25 here) if anybody wants the lot.

BTW, you can beat the '92 Bose sound quality for about $600. I did it a few years ago for under $500 - Alpine AM/FM/Single CD MP3, Alpine 6.5" 2-ways in the front doors & 6x9 3-ways in the rear deck, double-DIN adapter with tray under the head unit for the dash, Nissan to Alpine harness adapter and an adapter for the 2 antenna leads to plug into the single antenna input on the head unit. I used the car's original speaker wires with absolutely no problems. Just consult the schematic in the FSM to get the correct wire colors. Of course, I wanted external amps for the front and rear speakers and a sub-woofer, but then we'd be at the $1200 mentioned above. But, you don't need that stuff to beat the original Bose sound quality.

The rear ones are the ones I am having problems with. But the front speakers are making an annoying ringing sound.

So there is no need to go Bose if I don't have to? Because I like the sound but if there is something that is equal to that or close to I would love to know. I don't know that much about speakers... but I would like to get something good because I bought this car to revamp it and make it look good!

Take the above advice with a grain of salt, as it reflects personal preference and not real world frequency response measurement nor actual distortion measurements.

The annoying ringing in your fronts is your front amps dying. So, you need all 4 speaker amps repaired. Should be reason enough to start over with the whole system. If not, I have good rear speakers for you.

alright this may sound like a silly question but...are the amps in the actual speakers themselves??? how much are you asking for your rears?

The amps and speakers are together as units. Shipping plus $25 for the lot. It costs me $11 to US Customs just to drive them across the border to the Post Office or UPS. It's kind of a bigger, heavy box so shipping could be $20-25. I'll take out the bad front ones to reduce weight and maybe fit the stuff in a smaller box, if you like.

so it would be $50 total? If you could give me a couple days, I would be greatful.

Thanks

No problem. Meantime, I'll try to get it into a smaller box and get a proper shipping cost instead of just a guess. I don't think you'll need my fronts, but you really should get your fronts repaired. For the record, my fronts started to die with a constant "white noise" in the background that got louder over time. Turn your fader to full front and turn the system off to gauge how loud it really is (see how quiet the car suddenly gets).
