I have a 240sx and I am looking forward to move from my old KA24E engine to an S14 SR20. I keep hearing these rummors that the SR20DET from an S14 is way much stronger than a Red to SR20DET from an S13 since the S14 SR20 has the VTC? or top notch or VVL??? I am trying to understand what does the VTC do for the SR. Is it like the NEO VVL from a nissan Xtrail? I am confused can anyone explain whats going on thanks.

The S14 SR has about 15 more hp than the S13 redtop. It doesnt feel much faster. The engine just feels a little smoother. The S14 SR has VTC, it is a slight change in cam timing that gives the engine a little more torque from the low to mid rpm range. It does not have vvl which is similar to Honda's Vtec which increases power higher up in the rpm range. The power increase felt on the S14 SR is mostly attributed to the better turbo, not the VTC.

VTC - Variable timing control, older system low to mid range powerVVL - Variable Valve Lift timing - newer, high end power

you can swap an sr20ve head onto a sr20det but its expensive and costs quite a bit of money i have founf a vvl head for around 1000-1400 dollars it is nice if you want a powerband that is larger

To add to what was said, the VTC has the ability to advance and retard cam timing up to 20 degrees (which isn't exactly a slight change). It shuts off around 5k rpms and is used solely to increase low-end torque. It is not VTEC...

and to go further -- add some easy cams or stage 2 cams that keeps vtc then that 15 whp turns into 30 whp at anything over 6500 rpm. The s14 and s15 sr20dets are the best for 350-400 whp mild builds -- anything greater than 500 or 600 hp then it will not matter anyway since your engine will not have stock internals.
