Hi,

I'm usually over in the CA18DET section, but I'm trying to help out a friend. He has a 98 (later model) 4X4 QX4 that has a bad engine that he wants to put a junkyard engine into. I've pulled engines many times, but I've never messed with a QX4.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions. I'm sorry if these sound too basic, but I haven't been able to find the info I was looking for when searching junkyards.

1) I'm finding very few engines on car-part.com for this car. Are there any Pathfinder engines which will interchange with the QX4? Car-part.com only had engines from the QX4, but I suspect that the Pathfinder engine is the same or can be easily adapted to fit.

2) How much time realistically would I need to pull this engine? As I said, I've pulled engines before, but I've never messed with this kind of truck.

Thank you,

Darian

I won't be a ton of help since I haven't pulled the engine myself, but I can tell you the QX4 and Pathfinder engines are definitely identical. There are other vehicles that share the same engine, but I haven't seen too many conclusive answers as to what extent. The block will probably translate, but the heads on up will likely have subtle differences to accommodate different brackets, water routing, etc. The only additional insight I could give you is some folks here have swapped in JDM versions of the engine with some mild modifications. I believe this is done because lower mileage units are more readily available. Do a search for "JDM" here and you should find those threads pretty quickly.

Good luck!

I was a little puzzled by that so I did a search on car-part for an "engine" for a 1998 infiniti qx4, using USA as the search region. Got 21 pages of results including both Pathfinders and QX4's, lowest listed price was 250.00.

I haven't swapped one, but I am pretty sure they are a direct interchange. Maybe you had a wonky search result? I'd try again!

When I searched for 98, I got the same thing. His is the later "from 12/98."

Searching for a 99 Pathfinder does't show any interchange with the QX4. But I'm wondering if the difference is just an intake or oil pan or something like that. The parts store had the engines listed as the same in their computer.

Anyone know for sure?

All of these use the same exact engine, and should be 100% interchangeable.

1996–2000 Nissan Pathfinder
1997–2000 Infiniti QX4
1999–2004 Nissan Frontier
2000–2004 Nissan Xterra

These engines should be plentiful. Look at 99-00 Frontiers for the most results.
