I bought my 240 last year. The previous owner had done some questionable things to it, so i'm spending my time fixing his mistakes. The car idles horribly, the guy yanked the egr out but like everything else, I don't believe he did it right. Vacuum leaks galore i'm sure. I took some pics of a few hoses I found, 2 of them have screws stuck in the ends and one isn't capped at all. I'm wondering, should the hoses be connected to something or just capped properly?

Here you can see a hose that goes no where and has a screw shoved in it. What is this hose for?

The other hose I found with a screw stuck in it.

Here is the hose behind the valve cover that isnt capped at all, was that part of the egr setup?

Thanks for your help!

You need to trace back each vacuum hose and find out where it goes to. Pictures like that are very hard to tell what they are (even for me and other people who have been through the KA a hundred times) There are a plethora of small and large barbed fittings on the intake plenum that all need to be either capped or used. There are four test ports on the bottom of the intake runners under the injectors that are sometimes plugged with bolts as well, those tend to develop leaks. The lines that run from the IACV and the Air regulator to pre throttle body leak regularly as well. Just start at the front and work your way back (will require getting under the car too) to make sure you miss nothing. There are a BUNCH of lines that can be deleted when you pull the emissions stuff off, more than likely those lines at the very least need to be capped. Go get some silicone plugs and cap them at the fitting instead of in the middle of the line like that. You can always take it to a shop and get it smoke tested (simpler and easier)
