Still having problems with the trunk closing system. The trunk will open fine, but the closing motor seems to be failing. When all is working well, after the trunk open button is pushed, I can hear the upper latch being released from the lower catch. The release is followed by the sound of the motor operating to move the lower catch upward into the correct position to grab the upper catch. Once the trunk is lowered for closing, the flapper is pushed down, which activates the motor again and pulls the trunk into full closed position.

The problem with mine is that the lower catch is staying in the down position after the trunk is released. Then when I go to close the trunk, the upper catch will not engage with the lower catch. I have to work the flapper with my finger in order to get the motor to activate so that the lower catch will move up to the proper position for closing.

It seems to me that the part that is failing is the lower part, which is located behind the license plate. A new part is no longer available (discontinued by Infiniti), but I can find a used part on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-INFINITI-Q ... fresh=true

Before I order this part, I wanted to make sure that you folks agree with my diagnosis of the problem.

Anything else I should try before moving to purchase a replacement part?

Took out the trunk motor this afternoon but left it wired up. I am satisfied that this is the part that is not working properly. I imagine somebody more talented than I could figure out how to get the original part to work again. Since I don't know how to repair the original motor, I ordered the ebay motor that I linked above. The seller accepted a best offer of $50 including shipping. Hope this solves the problem.

As an aside, I could not figure out anyway to just operate the trunk using the key and just abandoning the motor assist feature. The key will open the trunk just fine, but I can't get the trunk to latch back to the closed position without the motor doing its thing.

Am I missing something or is there no way to just manually both open and close the trunk?

Hi...

Check the other posts - there is a post that one person determined the part is bent - Mine is bent and can only grab the trunk when I almost force it shut - my car is 2nd owner...
This is probably due to having peeps slam the trunk lid closed and the catch gets bent -
Hope this helps -
BTW - how hard is it to remove the mechanics?

I already checked prior posts earlier. The catch attached to the underside of trunk lid lines up correctly with part on the motor that it is supposed to line up with. My problem is that the motor does not always operate when the spring loaded flap is depressed. Sometimes I have to press the flap three or four times with my finger to get the motor to operate.

Removing the motor fairly simple. You take off the black plastic trim piece which runs the length of the trunk sill. To do this you remove two screws on the ends of the trim piece. The two screws are covered by a plastic screw covers which have a flap on top that you just move out of the way to access the screw head. The trim piece then just unsnaps from the body of the car. Then you remove a few fasteners which hold the felt trunk trim in place. You don't have to remove the whole piece of trunk trim, just enough fasteners so that you can get a socket on the three, 10mm bolts (brass in color) that hold the motor in place. With the three, 10mm bolts removed, the motor slides out toward the passenger side even with the wire harnesses still all connected. Once the motor is out in the open, you just disconnect the wire harnesses.

I did not disconnect the wire harnesses as I don't have my replacement part yet. So I am not sure what sort of pain in the neck that will be. Figuring out wire harness connections without breaking the harness is always an issue for me. I just took my motor out so that I could study its operation to see if I could fix it somehow. Once I gave up on that, I just remounted the motor so that the trunk will still latch shut while I wait for the replacement part.

Replacement part arrived a few days ago and I installed it today. Remove and replace only took about 15 minutes. Trunk assist is now working properly. I was able to study the failing part more closely once it was completely removed from the Q and on my workbench. I took a few things apart and put them back together to see if I could find some sign of corrosion or wear. Nothing obvious was found so I am still not sure why the motor was working only intermittently. Oh well, any Q repair that is completed for $50 or less and with minimal time investment is a good repair.

If you decide to replace your trunk motor assist, you might want to call Infiniti of Scottsdale to confirm if the part for the gen 3 Q is the same as the part for the gen 2. The gen 3 trunk motor seems to be more readily found on ebay. I have seen a couple for under $30 including shipping. The first five digits of the part number (84206) are the same between the two generations and the pictures look identical.
