I have a 92 hatchback that leaks rain water into the spare tire area during heavy rain.

The seal around the hatch looks alright. I cannot find where the water could be coming from. When I check the car in the morning there is a small puddle in the spare tire area. It is really beginning to frustrate me because it is starting to rust now.

Are there any leak prone areas in the hatch area? Should I just replace the seal around the hatch?

thanks

ill bet you have the factory foam spoiler. ill also bet that there is rust holes underneath it. take off the covering from your hatch and check that see if there is holes, it is a very common problem.

My car doesnt have a spoiler on it, Im not sure if the previous owners had removed it and covered the holes up because the car has been painted.

Will the Taillights leak when the car is just sitting in heavy rain?

they can. look all around and "follow" the water to it's source, as that will give you the best indication of were it is leaking. if it is your tail lights, here is some info that will help you.

Pretty common on most sedans for water to leak in around the tail light seals. The sealer is pretty weak from the factory. Run water down the channels along the hatch opening let it run down right over the lights and look from the inside to see which if not both are leaking around where they come into the trunk/hatch area.

Im gonna pull of the panels covering the taillights this weekend to try and track down that leak.

Thanks for the input!
