The release at the driver's door works fine and the key fob also works fine to open the trunk. But after opening, the mechanism does not seem to be returning to the "up" position so that it is in position for the closing process. Sometimes I have to push the flapper with my finger or with a key in order to get the mechanism to lift back into position to grab the latch when the trunk lid is lowered for closing. I have sprayed some wd40 and then some silicone lube down in the area but I am still having the problem.

Am I having symptoms of solenoid failure?

Or some other problem?

I know that the problems did seem to start when one of my son's friends slammed the trunk extremely hard as he did not know about the trunk assist feature.

Could something be out of alignment from the hard slam?

I had some time to take off the trunk trim today to get a better look at the trunk motor. The latch that is attached to the trunk lid depresses the flapper that is attached to the motor which is behind the rear license plate. The flapper is spring-loaded and is designed to pop the trunk up when the latch is released. The problem with mine was that the flapper was not springing up with sufficient force because the flapper had become tweaked from a hard slam. With the trim off, I could get a better look at the designed path of the flapper and bend it back to a path that would no longer cause any stickiness in the springing motion. I sprayed some silicone down on the moving parts also to make sure things had no friction.

The problem seems to be solved and I am glad to not have to search for a new trunk motor. The part does not appear to be easy to find and the few I saw on ebay were not cheap.

Was the trunk assist unique to the AE version? I do not remember having it on the fgy33. anyway, glad you found a fix!

I don't know what model year saw the start of the trunk assist feature and I am not sure if I am even using the correct name for the feature. The ebay listings for the trunk motors show a range of years covering all of the fgy33 generation.

I have a 05 and was wondering if there's anyway to silence the beeping when the trunk lid is lowering automatically after pressing the close button? I love the feature of it lifting and lowering on its own but the beeper is a little much..

Sorry, can't help with your beeping. The second gen trunk assist only pops the trunk unlocked without any musical accompaniment. You still have to lift the trunk lid yourself. To close the trunk, you still have to lower it yourself. After the trunk lid is gently lowered into position, the motor snugs the trunk down and locks it. The one thing you don't have to do is slam the trunk shut. So I have to keep those who don't know the car away from my trunk. One of my son's friends slammed the trunk lid down, which is why I was having problems with the trunk motor.

All trim levels from 1999. IIRC, when the taillights changed the HIDs followed accompanied by the headlight dimmer switch... just a few of the standard features off the top of my head.

I know the beeper is there for safety to avoid a slow guillotine session. Only thing I'd say is to cut the wire from the beeper module to the speaker.(No idea where that is located, just a guess based on my understanding of the control system on Nissans).
Edit: ask a dealer if that's a feature they can turn off with the Consult tool.
