After moving to college I'm on the highway a lot more with my 94 4 banger and it is I'm hitting 3500rpm doing 70. What kind of mods could I do to bring that down a bit and maybe increase the top speed without sacraficing too much torque?

slightly larger tire or different gears in the axle could allow you to lower rpms at 70mph. problem is....then your speedo will be off. you will also loose some torque.

more powa!!!

is it a 5spd? i had a nissan w/ a KA/auto (granted it was newer) and i wouldn't hit 3000 rpm until ~84mph... at 70 it was at 2200 or so.

hah... fellow bears fan i see -- freaking sweet man.

Yeah it's a 5spd...what effect would an underdrive pully have on this if any?

None. That just makes your accessories spin slower, but engine rpm would remain the same at spead. That's a function of gearing. What axle code do you have? If you have a CA46, for instance, you could swap in R&P gears from a CA43 front and rear, though that would be expensive, time consuming, and the effect on overall performance of the truck would be negative. It would serve only to get your cruising rpm down.

Larger tires, as stated will adjust this as well. Your speedometer / rpm relationship won't change, but keep in mind that with larger tires, your speedo will be reading slower than your actual speed. You can caclulate the difference by determining the % increase in tire size over stock and applying that to your speed.

3500 seems really high to me. i use to drive a 97 and it would hit 3000 but yeah i never found anything to do either that was inexpensive so i just dealt with while i had the truck and then bought a nissan car 240sx to do road traveling. good luck and go bears

My vg30e is the exact same way..so like the others say gearing or rear end is the way to go.

I drive a 2000 X-Terra with the 3.3L V6 and I'll run 3500 RPM @ 75MPH. I have a 5 speed so I can squeeze 18 mpg in the city, but the highway is bad... 15 to 11 mpg (head wind). I've always thought highway driving should be better then in town, but I haven't found anybody who could explain this or find an issue. Just had a new timing belt puton @ 106K and it still runs the same.

I changed the air filter to a K&N, but not a lot changed. That's my only mod. The X-Terra has never given me any real problems so I chalk it up as a wash on the cash.

Good luck.

Try get free/locking hubs...that made a HUGE difference on mine, before I got them in the city I was looking at 15 and highway 19 but after 17 city and 24 highway.

Yeah it's not quite 3500 @ 70, more like 3150. 3500 @ 75. But I am getting better mpg...14 city 18 hwy. I just bought new tires so it looks like I'll have to wait a while to fix this problem as I'm not wanting to change gears. Either that or I'll have to do a lot of trail riding and help those new BFGs on their way to replacement

If the auto hubs are working properly, they're in the free position in 2wd as well, just like manual hubs.

The bottom line with these trucks is that they're underpowered for their weight (particuarly Xterras and Pathfinders) with curb weights around 5000 lbs and just 140-180 HP, depending on year and engine. RPMs have to be up so these engines are in their peak power band at cruising speeds to make performance reasonable.
