My buddy has the stock T3/T4 turbo, that has both an oil cooling and engine coolant line going to the turbo. He is running it without the coolant line because the seal is bad and coolant is going into the intake manifold. Has anybody else every done this? How long do you think his turbo will last?

There are actually a lot of turbos out there without the water cooling jackets. The best way to prevent early turbo failure without the coolant is to use a turbo timer. This will allow the engine to run for a few minutes after driving to allow the turbo enough time to cool down keeping oil from coking inside it, which is what ruins them.

As for how long it will last... there's really no good way to tell unless you took it apart and inspected it and such... but if you did that it'd be best to just rebuilt it from there anyways. I'd go ahead and get a turbo timer to extend its life and/or run some different coolant lines to it.

Which seal is bad? There shouldn't be any seals that would allow coolant to go into the intake minus the seals between the heads and lower plenum, none that I can remember at least.
