Here is some information on trouble spots on maximas and I30's

from this linkhttp://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/used/

1995-99 Nissan Maxima: ReliabilityTrouble SpotsConsumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Automatic transmission: The original automatic-transmission (model F04) shift solenoids allowed slipping and premature wear. (1997)Brake noise: Rear brakes rattle on rough road. (1995)

Brake noise: Groaning from the rear brakes is caused by the parking brakes not fully releasing, requiring new brake cables and pads. (1995-99)

Brake noise: Groaning from rear brakes at slow speeds may be due to binding parking brake cable. 1995-99)

Clutch: The clutch may slip when accelerating hard in 4th or 5th gear due to a problem with the friction material. (1995)

Engine knock: Spark knock or ping may result from a defective onboard computer. (1995-97)

Engine noise: Noise from the front of the engine may be caused by excessive play in the timing chain for which a new tensioner and chain guide are required. (1995-96)

Hard starting: Hard starting, stalling, or stumbling under load could be caused by corrosion of the coolant sensor. (1995-96)

Hard starting: If the engine does not start on the first attempt, the engine may crank very slowly on the second attempt because of a problem with the engine-control computer. (1995)

Rough idle: Several problems (no-start, no A/C, rough running, etc.) can be traced to broken wires in the engine compartment where the harness bends near the right strut tower. (1995-97)

Rough idle: Rough running engine accompanied by check engine light may require revised powertrain control module. (1997)

2000-03 Nissan Maxima: ReliabilityTrouble SpotsConsumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Audio system: Popping and crackling noises in the audio system are often due to cell phones plugged into the cigarette lighter. Using a different power source or moving the phone often helps. (2000)

Cold-starting problems: The engine may idle too slowly or stall when first started (below 40 degrees F). Reprogramming of the powertrain-control module is required. (2000)

Engine misfire: Bad mass airflow sensor can cause lack of power, acceleration. New MAF and reprogramming computer should fix the problem. (2000)

Sunroof/moonroof: The headliner may sag near the sunroof because the Velcro does not hold sufficiently. Additional clips were being installed under warranty. (2000)

Vehicle noise: Noises from the right front strut require replacement of the rubber spring seat. (2000)

2000-04 Infiniti I30/I35: ReliabilityTrouble SpotsConsumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Headlights: The headlights may quit working because of a problem with the connector plug. (2002)

Rough idle: The engine may lack power or run rough or surge due to the mass airflow sensor failing. (2002-03)

Sunroof/moonroof: The sunroof may have problems including opening spontaneously and trouble setting the switch to the proper position or cold weather damage. (2002)

1996-99 Infiniti I30: ReliabilityTrouble SpotsConsumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle.

Brake noise: The rear brakes may moan or hum when released below 5 mph requiring replacement parking-brake cables and brake-pad retainers. (1996-99)

Dashboard lights: Some cars with the California emissions package may ingest water into the evaporative emissions canister, which triggers the check engine light. (1996)

Engine fan noise: The mounting flange for the fan (on the water pump) can come loose after service if the fan pulley is not installed properly during repairs. (1996-97)

Engine knock: Spark knock or ping may result from a defective onboard computer. (1996-97)

Trunk latch: The trunklid opens by itself from either the striker being out of adjustment or the driver accidentally hitting the release switch. The striker may be adjusted, and there is a revised switch to minimize accidental actuation. (1996-99)

Thanks for the info...

Ive found that consumerguides stuff isnt always 100% accurate. Remember these things were things that DEALERS saw under warranty, often what do not fail when the cars are older and have 100k on them...

I totally concur with Wes. Well maintained Maxima/130/135's are very reliable cars.

The info was intended for starting points for problem solving. This problem"Rough idle: Several problems (no-start, no A/C, rough running, etc.) can be traced to broken wires in the engine compartment where the harness bends near the right strut tower. (1995-97)" I have ran across when I was a auto tech. A 95 Max with over 200,000 came in as a no start. We were not getting spark from the coil packs. We did every test possible and ended up giving up and sending the customer to the dealer. We figured that the computer was bad or the wiring harness was faulty.
