Doesn't explain the letter Q designation.

Q was for quirky, as the marketing department certainly thought so!

I believe it just had a cool ring to it, and Infiniti generally started their cheapest car with a early letter of the alphabet and went thru with higher and higher end models using later letters

G20 J30 Q45

Z was used by nissan because it was the last letter of the alphabet, the final word when it came to sports cars....so the legend goes

True. But what about the second generation that had the 4.1? Hence the VH41DE designation?

These dates are approximate off the top of my head.

They needed to revamp the existing car and make it "less expensive", so they re-badged an existing 4 door RWD "luxury sedan" using the VH engine and viola we got the 4.1 liter Q45. The JDM version of our 1997 Q45 existed (~1994) for a few years before it replaced the USDM Q45 ... which was still produced up until ~2002 as the Nissan President.

But the only other car marketed at the time the Q45 was introduced was the M30. So.....

G20 [good enough for masses] powered by a I4 with 2.0 liters.

They though about a S45 for SUCKER but Mercedes already claimed that
