I bought my 1994 Q45 with 123,000 miles a few months ago and with the exception of replacing the battery in the first week of ownership it has run great. It is pretty obvious from reading all the posts that I need to keep on top of the preventative maintenance in order to keep it running this way.

My problem is with the trip odometer/warning message display in the lower right corner of the instrument panel- It does not work. Is there a fuse or module that controls this function? The owners manual made no mention of one. I suspect that the previous owner may have unplugged something to hide a fault (one of the airbags is missing and the airbag warning light was covered with black tape) and I would like to get it working again. I looked behind the instrument panel and everything appeared to be plugged in.

I posted a similar message on the general board and one of the members thought that both of the lights for this display may have burned out. This could be but I can't help but think it could be something else. Any thoughts or similar problem?

Great website and message boards. I have learned a lot about my Q in the past few months.

My gut reaction is bulbs too. There is a fuse, but it also controls the mirrors and the seat positioner, so if these work, the fuse is fine. See if you can shine a light at the display and read anything off of it. The LCD should work independently of the backlight.

I used a flashlight and was able to work the displays so it was just the bulbs. Thanks for the advice.

My next move is to find replacement bulbs (available from Infiniti?, are they plugged in or soldered?) and instructions on removing the instrument cluster. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

The problem with the odometer was that both bulbs were burned out. You both were right on the money with your diagnosis.

I took me awhile to get to it since I had to buy a service manual on e-bay, and bulbs from Joe. Instructions and pics in the service manual were adequate to get the job done and the few message threads on this subject backed up what the manual said. I am an engineer involved in building rocket motors but lack confidence when working on cars since I've messed up some repairs on other cars in the past. This repair was not that difficult and during the disassembly I was able to fix my cig lighter (not plugged in) and repair an annnoying rattle (missing screws).

For all you newbies and those who may be hesitant to work on your Q (I am both) I have the following recommendations:- Buy a service manual (why couldn't Infiniti have printed it on larger paper so you could see more details in the drawings?). The money I saved today by doing this repair myself more than paid for the service manual.- Spend a few hours reading all the threads here and in the Q45 forum.- Buy your parts from Joe and you will save a lot of $$$.- Trust the advice of DAEDALUS and Elwesso (and any other moderator on this site). They know their stuff.

I also cleaned The MAF and throttle body a couple of weeks ago. Very easy to do and the results were immediately noticable.

Thanks to you both for your advice.
