For the past couple weeks I've been trying to find out my true fuel consumption. I brimmed the tank and reset my trip meter. When my fuel gauge hit 1/2 a tank, I recorded the trip mileage so I could calculate my fuel consumption. Here's what I found.

175.4 miles / 5.4 gallons = 32.5 mpg

That isn't bad, but the trip computer says that I'm averaging 37.4 mpg, which is very far off.
I have a 2012 S Sedan model with CVT, which has a combined fuel economy of 33. But I've heard other Versa owners say they are averaging higher than that, sometimes up to 44 mpg. I think that those people are trusting the trip computer too much. Anyone else who has tested their actual fuel consumption, post them here because I want to get some real numbers.

As long as you refilled to the same point and found you'd used 5.4 gallons, I'd trust that number, although more so averaged out over a few tanks. The fuel gauge isn't at all accurate, so "half a tank" isn't really half a tank, etc.

I've never used a trip computer, so I can't help there. But I have kept complete records for decades on various cars. The numbers for the two Versas I've driven, over 180,000 miles total, are in my signature. When I was driving a 54-mile each way commute at about 60mph average, I got much better mileage, of course. Over the last eight months, driving short distances and totaling about 1k per month, my mileage has dropped by 1-2 mpg, now averaging about 30.5 mpg.

The tank is 10.8 gallons so I just used 5.4 as half.

Should be 13.2 gallons, but as I said, even at that the fuel tank isn't symmetrical, so the gauge isn't accurate. Just fill to the same point every time, keep track of a few tanks and you'll get an accurate measurement. Maybe the trip computer you have needs to be calibrated, too. But if it took a couple of weeks to get 175 miles, you're doing short-trip driving, so you won't do as well as you would with mostly highway mileage.

I only use the trip computer as a gauge as it is overly optimistic. In the short time that I have had my Versa, I have used Fuelly and have averaged between 34 - 42 MPG, with most in the 36-40 range. The trip computer has shown it at 43 MPG and maybe one day I'll get that actually, but I wouldn't rely on it as actual.

I never have relied on it but I figured it would read 1 or 2 mpg higher, but I wasn't expecting it to be 5 gallons off.

Remember that the trip computer is calculating at a certain time period so it may not always count idle time and other factors that using the miles traveled and gallons filled to fill the tank would show, so it could be off a lot.

Here are some better numbers after my latest fill up.
215.3 miles / 7.371 gallons = 29.2 mpg
Even less impressive.

I just got a Versa Note 5 speed manual two weeks ago. Had the first fillup today. The trip computer consistently reads 39 MPG, which I knew had to be wrong. I drove 335 miles and put 9.617 gals in the tank, so the mileage came out to 34.83, a little over 4 MPG differential. Driving was mixed city and freeway. I'll keep updating to see if anything changes. I'm pretty happy with the mileage though. I do my best to minimize undue acceleration and idling, and I am soft on my cars as a general rule.

Happy driving, everybody!
