I know that when the speedo goes out it usually takes "warming the car up: before it comes on. Mine has the opposite problem. It comes on for 5 seconds but only if I disconnect it from its harness and reconnect. (even then its not a 100% thing) So clearly it wouldn't be the same deal... Here's what I've done so far.

My Speedo has not worked since I got the car.

Recently, I tried to do the HUD Cluster Fix.

After removing the cluster I plugged just the speedo back into its harness.

When I turned the key it !!!LIT UP!!!

Then died after about 5 seconds

So I start testing the capacitor, but the the unit never powered back up.

I disconnected it and reconnected it and it lit up agian then died after about 5 seconds.

So I kept testing capacitors like the article said.

I got to about the third one when the speedo slipped out of my hand and hit the ignition. Causing a spark and some smoke.

But the when I unplugged it and reconnected, it came on again.

Does anyone know what the issue could be...

**More Importantly, since the spark fixing the speedo I've had some problems.

** Odometer doesn't work**A.S.C.D. doesn't work**Dash Lights Don't work

The tach works,The Gauges workThe signal lights work (CEL, Brake, Ect)The speedo came on the FIRST time I started it after putting everything back together, but went out right away again.

I have checked all fuses under the dash and in the engine compartment as well as the fusable links (just in case)

PLEASE HELPThe loss of cruise and my odometer really sucks

.... this is a tough one, but I'm guessing that when you sparked something and it started to smoke, that was the begining of the end for your cluster. If I were you I would start searching for a used one on hte classifieds, or buy a new one from nissan. Good luck man, but it might be too late for that cluster.

PCB are very delicate items electrically and although before the sparking and smoking it might have been salvagable, it's quite possible (though not definite) that the board is ruined and unsalvagable. The #1 cause of failure for the HUD is that little capacitor. If that isn't your problem, it may be that the cluster is just gone and will have to be replaced.

Good luck!
