The FZ4 was built as a fill-in. Not economy cheap, (we have Chinese brand [Wanli] to cover that market) but also not ultra spendy like a Michelin Pilot, or other UHP or Competition tires. Since the FZ4 was released, with the T1 already to market, Toyo has introduced an updated T1(called the T1-Plus, now also defunct) the T1-S, and the Proxes4. The RA-1 remains basically the same competition tire.
The Toyo Proxes4 is the replacement to the FZ4. Tread designs and specs are on the toyo homepage.
The FZ4 was noisy by comparison, didn't grip as well as advertised in wet(or dry), and wasn't as round (as measured by Hunter9700, on average, over years of application practice) as other tires from competing brands. You'd spin up a set and have to become critical of which tires to fit on the front of the car, knowing that even after match mounting and optimizing, the tire/wheel assy was not 100% or even close. Cheaper..relatively, considering Toyo builds generally high quality stuff.. construction, to move more units at lower cost, to increase unit volume, and hence, profits in a booming market segment.
RIP to what was once a breakthrough in sizes previously unavailable in many sought after 17" and up applications. The new 4 is proving to be a better tire in all aspects.
