Travel w/out 2nd gear?

My '96 Maxima has been w/out 2nd gear for three months now; waiting to come up with the funds to rebuild the transmission. It has 154k on the odo. Aside from skipping 2nd, the car runs fine. I need to make a 1,000 mile trip (500 each way). Is it safe to take it under these conditions?

That probably depends on why 2nd gear is out. If the gear is coming apart, that could send debris throughout the transmission and that would not be good.

If its highway miles it might be less stress on the transmission(less gear shifting)
