Yesterday while driving my car it started to get progressively harder to shift gears. Once in the gear it was fine but getting it there was the problem. Before too long I couldn't get it into first gear at all and the others started getting even harder. I got to my workplace and parked, hoping that when it cooled down everything would be fine. When I got back in about an hour later, I reversed out of the parking space but couldn't shift into any other gear. To get back in the parking space, I turned off the car and while off was able to put the car in 1st gear and start the car (while in 1st gear) and park. So I can shift through the gears while the car is off, but once the car starts, I can now only shift into reverse. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

I have 1995 Jeep Wrangler and it does the same thing when I try to climb steep hills or pulling someone out of a mud hole.

My personal opinion on what my problem and could be yours is when running kinda hard on the clutch and trans it heats up the clutch and kinda glazes the clutch causing it to stick.

when was the last time you replaced the clutch?

I just bought the car, but it was supposed to have had a new clutch put in at the time of the engine swap. But, I don't know how the previous owner was with it.

Last night I tried it again and this time I pulled the clutch up with my foot and noticed that it moved about an inch or so. After that it went into 1st gear fine and then second gear. Then I couldn't get it back in first so I pumped the clutch a few times (someone had suggested this in the 240sx tech forum) and it went into 1st again. I think this means that there might be air in the clutch line, is that the correct conclusion?

yep it would be a hydrolic problem for sure then. Bleed it an see if that resolves it if not you probably have a leak either at the slave cyl or the master cyl.
