Hey guys - I have a 99.5 Pathfinder which means I have the key with the computer chip in the key. The dealer wants like $80 for the key and another $60 to program - not happening! I want to buy a key second hand - is this safe?

This is what I'm looking at -- seems legit...http://item.express.ebay.com/9...sItem

I bought a transponder key on ebay but its the OEM Infiniti key with logo As long as its got the chip inside you should be alright. That auction looks legit and $20 is a great deal, the guy has good feedback so i wouldn't worry too much. I personally paid about $40 shipped for the key and another $40 to get it cut and programmed at a local locksmith. (I had to call around cause some people want A LOT, i had some people quote me $100+ just to cut and program, if i provide the key)

If somebody knows where to find instructions on programming, it would be helpful. I know the locksmith that did mine had a binder full of info on all cars, and the QX4 took him about one minute to program. Probably some very simple procedure like turning the key 5 times and pressing the door ajar button, for example! (Don't try that, i just made it up!) Nissan programming is always something simple but ingenious.

Getting it cut is like $2 at any liquor store.

What! Where did he hook the computer up to? I watched my guy do it and it looked like a simple procedure, no computer, just instructions on paper

well I'm going to go ahead and buy the key on eBay and just take my chances I guess. I think I was asking all this b/c I didn't know what kind of chip needed to be inside the key...i guess i could report the guy to ebay for false advertising if he gives me something that doesn't work but his feedback # is good so we'll see.

You definitely need a scanner type tool that accesses the onboard ECU to program the new key into the memory. Each key has a chip with a unique number coded chip. When you insert the key into the ignition the onboard ECU reads the key code and checks it against the list of key codes that are stored in memory. If the code is recognized it then allows you to start the car.

When ever you get a new key you must bring all of your existing keys with you to get them reprogrammed back into the ECU memory as the first step in the key programming process wipes out all the existing keycodes. The locksmith then inserts the keys one at a time into the ignition which gives the ECU the chance to read each key's keycode chip and store it in memory. The memory has room for up to four individual keycodes.

The dealer usually charges about a hour labor to program the ECU. You can usually find it for around $50 or so from outside locksmiths. Just make sure that you bring all of your keys or you will be stuck with a non working key.

that works bc i live in winter park so that HD on 50 (assuming it's the one just east of 436) could be my spot too.

Hey - I just posted a new post asking for help with struts - can you take a look at it and advise...
