Transmition Problems only got 4th

well i was driving arround and i started noticing it felt like my clutch was slipping. i would be in 5th give it gas and it would feel like it was slipping revup and not really go anywhere. so i was like well i'll just go home and figure someting out later. stopped at a stop sign it wouldnt go anywhere. the only gear i have is 4th which is direct drive. im assuming the cluster gear has broken off of the trans housing inside. so i drain the fluid to see if any metal comes out nothing. its not the clutch cause i put one in cause thats what i thought it was first. cause it did it in all the gears. anyways what do you guys think? im gonna get another trans but i have never had this problem. just wanna know what it could be. its a 98 240.

It would have to be something with the clutch gear/counter gear/counter shaft inside the transmition as its used in all gears BUT fourth... but it sounds like you already knew that. When you get the new trans dont just dump the old one, yank that thing open come back here an let us know.... sorry I couldnt be of more help

Okay for anyone who wants to know i figured out what the problem is. one of the shift forts had broken about 3/4 of an inch broke off. took it apart today and sure enough hard to see but it was broken. so that was the problem. now does anyone know where i can buy a rebuild kit for it. since im in it i might as well rebuild it.

i didn't come across a manual transmission rebuilt kit @ all... guess you'll either have to go dealer/sponsor for that part/parts or get another whole unit from salvage yard.

PS: i had a broken transmission in my garage; just didn't open it up yet to see what was broken --input shaft doesn't even turn:(

a fellow NICOnaut gave me a spare transmission for $140 & got me back on the road... just kinda busy w/ NICOtots to even install my short shifter i got for my car's 200K odometer turnover.

damn thats hella cheap. i foudn one with 80k on it for 250 when i get back from vacation i'll put it in.
