I got a 95 240 5spd. manual with 164k miles on it a few days ago and something in the transmission area is whining. I checked the oil level in it yesterday, and it didn't have any, or was really low, so i filled it all the way back up and drove it today but something is still whining. Im thinking its the thowout bearing because it whines with the car in neutral and reving it up, but as soon as you press the clutch in, the whine goes away...it also makes a rumble like noise idling, but again, it goes away when the clutch is pressed. Once in gear and moving, the whine changes pitch with rpm change. The only thing I dont understand is that it whines in every gear including reverse except for 4th gear, which makes me think its a throwout bearing and something else. The guy said it had a ACT clutch kit put in it maybe 4k miles ago.

its possible that one of the bearings inside the transmisson has gone bad from lack of lubricant (trans fluid) and it dosent wine in 4th because its not spinning that bearing. if it were the throwout bearing it shoulden't wine when you foot isnt on the clutch as its not engaged and sholdent be moving.

so when the transmission is in neutral, without the clutch pushed in, its probably spinning the row of gears that has the bad bearing(s), causing the whine? if so, that makes sense.

yea its also possible that in 4th it just holds that bearing steady enough to keep it from whining. but im no trans specialist.

If it only wines when the clutch is not pressed, it's your pilot bearing. When the trans was drained of oil and ran, it prob widened the opening from too much play.

I gotta 1990 240sx that makes the same noise, i thought mine was the throwout bearing too but the local shop told me it was the input bearing. He said it could last forever like that but u might as well get a new transmission because the labors gonna cost ya a little bit.

The input bearing is the same as the pilot bearing, and is not even on the trans. Its in the motor, and not hard to change......Ha, listen to a mechanic...That will do nothing but empty your pockets.

does it sound like this?

this is my trans and I was thinking it was my pilot bushing. I've been getting major driveline vibrations due to a s***ty driveshaft. I got another now, but its already knocking. Do you think the vibrations could have worn the pilot bushing down in 1 week (did my manual swap a week before it started making noise)

Damn right..you can ruin the pilot bearing by letting the trans sit it the hole without supporting it....So I can say without a doubt that a hopping shaft will def ruin it quick.
