I'm looking at a J30 that had been towed for about 300 miles with the wheels on the ground. The owner says it won't go in reverse and barely goes forward. Curious what the damamge is and what is needed to get it working properly. I'm a good mechanic but with no auto transmission experience.

Thanks.Chris

Budget for a Nissan factory rebuild. That one is toast.

YEP, your not supposed to tow a RWD nissan with the wheels on the ground for more than say a handful of miles at a slower speed.....

But yeah, budget for a new trans..

its certified toast

if you absolutely must tow a car with the drive wheels on the ground, then the engine must be running with the car in neutral. this provides line pressure, lubricating the clutches and bands, planetaries, ect.

damage may still occur though, especially over long distances.

Loosely-related factoid: Remco makes a 12-volt pump that provides continuous transmission lubrication while the vehicle is being towed - very popular among motorhome owners.
