Who has installed a trans temp meter? What is the best place to install the sender.

I would like to take some readings prior to addinng a transmission cooler.

In the pan. If you're careful you won't have to remove the pan, use a punch to create a hole just slightly smaller than the threads and then use the correct size tap.

That would be a clever option also. Assuming that you have a properly functioing transmission and cooler, then it doesn't really matter where the temp is taken from, just as long as you get a decent baseline during normal driving and then can compare it to some hard driving/stop and go etc.

Remember the line from AT to heat exchanger is the the true peak temperature point not the cooled/heated return line to planetary/pan.

However the AT internal sensor measures somewhere inbetween these extremes.

Good point I guess you really want to know what the temperature is coming out of the transmission. The ideally measure again to see the temperature coming out of cooler.

I will plan on putting it on the line from AT to the cooler and measure temps.

I like the manifold idea becuase I can take it out later. As opposed to tapping the pan I dont plan on keeping it long term, as I dont really see a good place for it.

My transmission has a 120k on it with 2 dealer flushes and 1 BG flush documented, so now its ready for its third.

I would like to combine the addition of the transmission cooler with the fluid change when I do it but would like to see if the transmission cooler is needed if the fluid is just changed every 30k. As far as I can see everyone just says add it, but no before after temps to show it was needed in the first place.

We have see the increase in line pressures we cause by adding the cooler, however we dont know if that has any negative results.

The way I see it if it isnt broke dont fix it, if temps stay low enough with the factory cooler, then why add extra line pressure.

I guess it depends on where you live and what kinds of driving you do. Thats why I would like to monitor myself.

Can the internal sensor be easily read, I know the USB Consult wont do it

Back when Dodge made motorhome chassis, the ATF temp gauge sensor was located there, for that reason. It doesn't really matter how well your ATF cooler is working, if the ATF is getting fried before it even reaches it!

That depends on how you install it. My pressure went down significantly after I plumbed the new one in PARALLEL with the existing one.
