So, the funny noise my pathfinder was making is the transmission...I took my car to AAMCO (they rebuilt the last one 75k miles ago) - my car recently had the flex plate removed and when I told the aamco guy he said I should take it to they guy that fixed the flex plate.

Wellll the guy that did the flex plate is actually far, I didnt have a ride to his shop so I thought AAMCO does transmissions only... they should at least confirm that the sound is coming from the transmission seeing as I paid them 1300 + 1400 to install the last transmission. i thought since they charge so much they must be experts... well when I decided that I was going to just get another car ... the aamco guy asked me what i was planning on doing with my car.. I said i was going to park it in my drive way.... so he says.... Well Let me help you... If you pay for the parts i wont charge you labor. Okay. I dont know why but... this sounded a lbit strange??

So I asked him... well are you being nice to me just because im pretty or is it my lucky day?

Am I crazy or doesnt it take hours of work to take out a transmission on a 4x4 pathfinder?

Am I crazy or really who works for free? I dont know? Why didnt they rebuild THE last transmission for free and only charge me part?? Hmm... what do you think??

Well I should have realized your were a female by your name, I was getting a bit concerned when you used the word "pretty" to describe yourself...DOH! Guess I should pay more attention..lol

Any how I am not sure of his intentions but I could take a pretty good guess at what hes tryin to get out of it.

At this point whos at fault? The guy that replaced the flex plate or Aamco? If its Aamco I say take advantage of the situation have him do the work and you pay for parts. When its all said and done though dont divy up any special favors, If you know what I mean.

I do have a question though. Your profile states your occupation is a mechanic??? I too live in california about an hour and a half from you. I know the area your in, which Aamco are you going to?

I'm a mechanic only because I spend lots of my free time fixing my own car.

I think I am gonna try to do it myself. Ive been reading the dealer service guide and except for the damn thing weighing a million tons i dont think its too difficult. I helped my ex put a transmission in his nissan pickup and then again in my old dodge colt. I love my pathfinder and IM not gonna give it up that easily.

Any advice on where I can find a cheap transmission? Ebay sells them for 900 with warrenty... but I am super broke. The flex plate cost me 800... Im in Santa Clara and the AAMCO is on El Camino.. I think the guy riunning it is Dave? Hes nice but i swear just because Im a female I dont get equal treatment... so last thing is said to him is not to be shocked when I come back and have it all done on my own. So any tips for me?

I am not sure I know whats wrong with it. What did they determine was the noise? You know it may just be that one of the torque convertor bolts backed aut and is hiting something in the bellhousing area, have seen that a few times ,especially after work was done involving removing the bolts.

On a difficulty level of 1 to 10 on nissan transmissions, the D21 series 4x4 trans is probably a 9. Alot of stuff needs to be removed including the torsion barsmake sure you measure the length of the threaded section of the adjusters to reset it back to its original ride height when going back together. Before you undue any part of the torsion bar you need to release the tension on the rods by loosening the adjuster you measure. [DO NOT dissasemble the torsion bars], be sure to leave the bars in thier holders, on the front undue the 2 14mm nuts and one larger nut to releast the torsion bar from the lower control arm.On th back remove the 4 17mm bolts holding the torsion bar cross memeber to the frame. The starter comes out from the front of the crossmember, you need to unbolt the idler arm from the frame and let the steering linkage hang inorder to pull the starter all the way out at that point you can remove the golt bracket that was around the starter and gain access to the torque convertor bolts. Before even going under the car there is a loom of wires coming up by your transmission dipstick on the passenger side. release the loom from the dipstick tube and anywhere else up top and disconnect the 4 or 5 connectors on the loom along the passenger fender well in the engien compartment, then push the whole group of connectors down under the car.

Thise are a couple of the more important things I can think of at the moment ,if I can remember anything else I will let you know. Also DONT do this alone you have to have a second person help you. As you now that trans is very very heavy.

This forum has been very helpful! Extra thanks to you for your assistance! I'm pretty confident I can get this project done with you advice and reference material available! Do you have any suggestions as to where I can locate a transmission at a "decent" price?

Thank you again!!!

if you are going to do it yourself(assuming you dont have a lift) i reccomend a "low lift transmission jack" its like $100 off the internet tool web sites. i also reccomend removing the transfer case separately if you are working without a lift.
