I've been noticing a lot lately that when I get on my car not WOT but to get up to speed in 3rd-4th gears it has this little jerky feel as I am applying more throttle especially when using manual mode. The car shifts fine once it is started and drove for the first time but once it heats up it starts having the jerky feel and also feels as if it is not pulling as hard. I notice the hotter it gets the worse it shifts. Car has 110k on it now and not sure if it has ever had the transmission reprogrammed. Every time I take it to the dealership and ask them about whether it has been done they say there is no transmission service bulletin. I am planning to do a drain and refill over the next 2k miles or when I go in for the next oil change. Just wondering if anyone else has been having this issue with their M56S?

I don't have that sensation but I definitely have that 'lag' that many of us have posted about over the years which actually may be a 'slip' or something. I plan to do my fluid in the next 15-20kmi too. I'm at 112kmi so similar to you.

It almost feels as if the car is trying to go faster but being held back. Gives me that bull in a cage type feel. I did have some mods done and have a tune that I think may need to be redone by Joe Wahl as I do seem to be running a bit rich still if that is the one where the black dust comes out the tailpipes when you get on it and leaves some smoot on pipes. Motor is great but it has that 2 second lag on take off that apparently getting a tune was suppose to get rid of but does not at least for me. To be honest these cars suck in hot weather because of the horrible engine design or engine bay where it builds up so much heat and kills the power. I rather only drive this car in fall and winter when temps are no higher than 75 degrees as that is when it performs best.

That's why I spend 95% of my time in manual mode. I also have that slight second delay when mashing the gas in D...but my car takes off. I only have 'lag' when I'm coasting to a light or something and then it turns green and I try to give it gas...instead of dropping a gear the car stays in a higher gear and 'chugs'...but not always. It happens like once or twice a week. Very odd behavior.

Yeah mine does that now as well. There is a pedal commander that one of my friends put on his 2016 Camaro SS to help with lag when hitting the pedal. he said that it works wonders for him. They even make it for our cars and is just a plug and play device. Thinking about getting one and seeing if it helps fix the lag issue.

Ah man lol. I don't have it on mine. Was looking at reviews on Youtube and it seems to do the job for a lot of people. I made two post on the FB groups yesterday asking if anyone had used it. Someone with a y51 said that the one they made for our cars has the wrong plug so it will not work.

Change all your fluids. Do a drain and fill on everything, if your car is an awd do the transfer case.

I may have used manual 1-2 times and noticed that the gear box does not shift past 3rd gear. Am I doing something wrong?

It won't shift until you hit certain MPH thresholds. You can't go from 1st to 4th doing 15mph, for example. Maybe you weren't going fast enough? Try using M on the highway...

That is the plan to do next. Change transmission fluid and maybe rear axle fluid.

I rarely use manual mode, just as others said it won't shift if your not going fast enough. It did that same thing only mine was from 4th to 5th.

It's cool how it knows what's up.

Before you use just any fluid do some research.

I was going to go with Redline, Royal Purple or Amsoil, I went with the Amsoil. You need to find a dealer locally so it's not as easy to get but I think it's worth the wait.

I WILL NEVER USE NISSAN FLUIDS, don't like them one bit.

I had the lead tech at Nissan (cheaper than Infiniti) do the transmission just for peace of mind, there is a procedure that you should fallow to ensure that it is filed properly. The others are real basic, I had my other mechanic do those.

So I got a chance to drive it again last night to gas it up since I was driving it to work this morning. I think I figured out why it has the issues I was stating in my op. It all has to do with the temperatures either from the engine heating up or transmission heating up. I drove it out last night and the weather was in the mid 70's which is the best weather for these motors. I decided to do some test pulls in manual mode to see if it would still have that slipping feeling after being started for the first time that day. It did not and it actually pulled very hard and fast because the motor and transmission were not overheated from the 90 plus degree weather we have been having here the last month and half. It did not have that jerky feeling at all and the lost power feel either.

I did some 2nd gear pulls from 35 through 3rd gear up to 85 or so and it was scary how good and fast it was pulling and shifting. Decided to try a 4th gear WOT and it pulled hard as well without the jerky feeling I would normally get if the temps were hotter. All of this was done in Normal mode which I did not know I was in until I got to the gas station and decided to look back at the knob selector to see what mode I was in. I put it in Sport on the way back home and it pulled even harder and shifted faster. Maybe the car needs an aftermarket transmission cooler installed to keep it at optimal performance.

I am still going to have the transmission fluid changed with the Amsoil fluid. I saw a shop in my town that has the logo on it so I will stop in to see if they sell it. Now I am happy again with the car and remember how fast it is with the mods I have. Ready for the cold weather season so she can run at optimal performance cause these cars hate heat.

Don't have just any shop change the fluid.

There is more to it then a simple dragon and fill.

If they have the right tech manuals and know the procedure but I don't feel comfortable having others do it. If you're comfortable then I am.

Don't wait to long, if it's heat related do it asap.

I only let the dealership work on my car outside of the tire shop I use for alignments because they do a better job than the dealership. Either Infiniti or Nissan will be doing the transmission drain and refill.

Contract Nissan and Infiniti and see if they are willing to use other manufacturer fluid. Nissan was cheaper. I think I paid $50-80 for that service.

Amsoil had ATL on their bottles, it's confusing because it calls out for ATL. The way to verify is by looking at the bar code in the back.

Let me/us know how it goes.

Don't wait, you don't want that trans taking a crap.

Andy
