I've been reading the posts on here for a couple of days now and saw a similar problem that was solved with a loose wire. Is this my problem and if not, what is this wire and where does it go? It appears to have pulled out of a connector or a sensor, but I cannot see or feel any plug or broken wire that it goes to. My transmission shifts in and out of overdrive and I don't want to drive it this way for fear of damage. I cant get a picture to load so the description is as follows, a white wire in a black sheath on the back of the engine at the top and about 14" long from where it comes out of the connector at the harness. Any help is appreciated, thanks ,Jeff.

Sounds possibly TPS related. Keep working on uploading a photo, starting with setting up a free photobucket account or something similar.

I've now added a link in the original post for pics of broken wire. Hopefully this will give someone an idea of what it goes to. Thanks.

Actually they all show it but, I think the second two are a better view. I don't know why my camera is making two copies , it could be photo shop that does it. I was crawling around under the J last night and I still cannot see any plug or sensor that is missing a wire. My son drove the car for a year and changed the oil a couple of times and I thought he might have pulled something loose , but I couldn't see anything.

Also of interest, that wire is no where near as dirty as the rest of the wires in that area or maybe it is cleaner from being handled trying to figure out where it goes?

Yea, I know , its really dirty. I live on a farm and the dust is really bad in the summer and its been sitting for awhile just collecting. I'm just trying to get all the little things fixed on it so my other son can drive it. Its been the most maintenance free and dependable car I've ever owned and still love it to death and will probably never get rid of it. My wife bought the fx45 a couple of years ago and the J just hasn't got used as much since.

My 97 J30 does not have any wire coming from below headed in that direction (up over the top of the engine around the throttle cable). I was just there checking my idle air control valve connections, that thing just will not leave me alone!

The wire does not normally come up over , I just pulled it up there to get the picture. I cant get the camera in between the engine and firewall. It comes out of a plug on the harness on the driverside of the engine, at the rear of the engine, then it goes through a retainer loop and looks like it went up under the intake but I dont see any thing there.
