This is something that happened a little here and there when I first bought the car, but it's getting worse. When I shift into 3rd or 4th early in the RPM's there is this loud and low pitch roar. I'm going to be replacing the clutch soon and hopefully that will clear it up. Has anyone else experienced this?

Is yours a turbo (update profile!)? If NA, ignore everything below.

You sure it's not Goose Honk? I don't know about the transmission roaring, but I had a very minor goose honk when I had a single pop. I never thought anything of it, and assumed it was drivetrain related. When I went to dual pop, it got horrible. It sounded like I was killing a goose. It was so bad I would instinctively pull off the gas as you would when you hear your car making a horrid noise. Basically, goose honk happens on old worn out recirc valves when you float around 0 PSI, so typically under medium acceleration. not going full out, and not just a slow cruise. The valve floats back and forth instead just being open or close, which makes the noise. BDE sells a kit that CZP and others resell that fix it. Basically cut the top of the recirc off, put in a strong spring (provided), and RTV a new cap over the top of the recirc.

Sh*t sorry, I though I had that on my profile. I've altered it to NA.

So! I went and got the clutch replaced at a Z-specific shop. The mechanic calls me around noon to tell me the flywheel is messed up and he can't complete the job without a new one. He salvages a lightweight high performance flywheel from a wrecked 300ZX in his boneyard and he tells me that this thing won't be the same and he was NOT kidding! It just flat out LAUNCHES! It will take some getting used to. First off, trying to go over speed bumps slowly is a brand new b**** for real! I'll learn it though. BUT!!! The roar is gone and he said it was the flywheel that was causing it.

(btw, seeing a boneyard filled with nothing but 300ZX's in various levels of rust, decay and wreckage is both spooky and cool at the same time)

Out of curiosity, where is that?

Z-Car Atlanta. Off Buford Hwy just south of the Jimmy Carter/Buford Hwy intersection. It's not big like a full wrecker yard with a ton of different vehicles though. There's probably 40-50 cars there tops. Some 280Z's here and there and a 350 or two, but mostly Z32's and Z31's. Most were salvage cars that have been picked apart for various parts to repair other 300's they're working on (how I got my flywheel this go-round) and some have been in a fender bender or something. Very interesting walking around there!
