Reverse gears are not like the other gears. Reverse doesn't engage using dogs, but uses an idler gear to change the direction of the output shaft. The idler gear has to be moved into place. Dog engagement typically allows the use of syncros to help it mesh, but with reverse, there is no syncro to do this. Its simply hit or miss. Generally, I simply place the shifter back in neutral, let the clutch out and then push it back it. This changes the position of the input set of gears and generally allows me to get into gear.
Of course, if doing this, or even the 5th gear trick that Bob mentioned doesn't work and you consiustently have this issue, it may be a sign that something is awry.
Also, make sure you are pressing the clutch all the way in and that the clutch pedal is adjusted correctly. A clutch that is slightly grabbing can make it difficult to engage a gear, especially reverse.
