I was considering replacing the transmission on my 90 Q45 that went out at 142K. I was wondering if it's a hard thing to do and what time frame will I be looking at? I also wanted to know after I put in the transmission should I test drive it or change fluid and filter then test drive. My only concern is getting to the bolts that bolt the transmission to the engine. It's cramped quarters. My old filter screen was clogged and fluid was very black. If I purchase from a salvage yard what should I look out for? Gettin a brand new transmission is way too much and there is a cheaper way to go about this. As far as the torque converter will I need to replace that too? I have the next two days off so imidiate response would be appreciated.

Your TC doesn't have to be replaced if the clutches inside are still good, but you would likely have no way of knowing. It should definitely be flushed out to remove all the old fluid, though. I'd look for a used Japanese pull-out transmission like the ones they sell on ebay. Usually they have a 30 day warranty. Replace both seals & change the filter & inspect the fluid before installing it.
