I was considering replacing the transmission on my 90 Q45 that went out at 142K. I was wondering if it's a hard thing to do and what time frame will I be looking at? I also wanted to know after I put in the transmission should I test drive it or change fluid and filter then test drive. My only concern is getting to the bolts that bolt the transmission to the engine. It's cramped quarters. My old filter screen was clogged and fluid was very black. If I purchase from a salvage yard what should I look out for? Gettin a brand new transmission is way too much and there is a cheaper way to go about this. As far as the torque converter will I need to replace that too? I have the next two days off so imidiate response would be appreciated.

Another used transmission to replace the used one you are installing?

Way cheaper and more cost effective to get a Nissan remanufactured one from Joe.

Black fluid is way beyond severe abuse.

Look up 450zxtt, he had some used trannys for about $150.00

It is not much harder than replacing a Chevrolet transmission. You mikght want to replace the transmission mount. Mine was shot at 105K on Layla. I haven't had any transmission work done on Lola, yet. THe previous owner was a sticlker for maintenance, so I am sure it is fine.

lot of options out there for you. do the rear main [engine] seal while the trans is out. might be almost zero additional labor to do the O2s at that time also. DEFINITELY replace the turbine revolution sensor while the trans is out.

imo, the only thing an e-bay or most other used trans is good for [unless you PERSONALLY know the history] is a core to rebuild.
