I am trying to replace my clutch...I have all the bolts off of the transmission. It is seperated (about 2 inches), but i need a little more clearance for the transmission to drop. I undid the "brace" that is holding up the shaft. but that did not give enough clearance to drop the transmission.

What I was going to try next was to unbolt(4 bolts) on the back of the drive shaft that connects to the differential(i think thats what its called). either way its the very end of the drive shaft.

Questions: If I unbolt these, will oil come out? What is the easiest way to get the transmission off ?( besides paying someone to do it)

any guidance would be appreciated....

Remove the drive shaft my friend...And no oil will come out of the diff..It will come out of the transmission once you pull the drive shaft out...But im sure you drained the gear oil out of it already.

to drain the transmission fluid there is a bolt on the drivers side of the transmission it has a square hole in it take that out then remove the driveshaft from the transmission

That's the filler plug and not the drain plug...The drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission not the side...

DO THIS1.Drain the transmission oil

2.Remove the drive shaft..Four bolts and nuts on the end of the drive shaft to the diff..And the center hanger,Which is held in by two bolts..Then slide it out of the transmission..

OK, so to drain the transmission, unscrew the one that looks like a square...how much oil comes out? Reusable? I assume, refill with new gear oil.

I would recommend straining your used oil to look for particles and not re-using it. I like synthetics, I used Royal Purple transmission oil, it's called synchromesh or something like that.

i'm gonna try disconnecting the drive shaft...i really hope I don't have to pull the motor and transmission. i was thinking about lifting/tilting the motor a little without fully pulling it out. but i opted not to. don't want to make things worse. :-)

CMG, straining the oil for particles? I assume that if particles are found. that the transmission might need to be rebuilt. <knocking on wood> that would really suck.

just remove the driveshaft and everything will be good to go and no you wont have to rebuild your transmission dont sweat it..i think he meant dirt not metal particles

Makes sure DP or CAT/Test Pipe is disconnected so the motor can pivot, your also gonna have to drop the front crossmember down for the bellhousing of the transmission to clear the firewall/transmission tunnel. Good luck, its a royal PITD.

Well, tonight I detached the drive shaft, as well as the shifter...and...that f**cker still won't come out.

DrifterProdigy85,i know what you mean about it being a PITA. I put it in 3 years ago...and i don't remember it being this hard.

i think tomorrow, when i have more energy/strength...i'm gonna tug on it.

A noob question....does the car need to be in neutral for the transmission to come off? I don't really remember where I left it.

thanks for you patience guys...

nope, the trans can be in any gear when you take it off.i just separated an auto trans before i took my engine out, and it was a ***** to separate out of the car. it took a lot of jacking/lowering of the engine and trans for us to be able to get it off. but my manual trans was super easy to separate.so try putting a jack on the back of the trans and pulling on the trans, if it doesn't start to separate, lower or raise the jack and repeat.

The transmission is out.

DrifterProdigy85, thanks for the hint....i did have to remove the DP, so it would pivot.
