I found a Q45 in a junkyard with a seized motor and an apparently "good" transmission.

This motor suffered some major oil starvation issues.(It had oem plastic guides but instead of being broken, they were melted to the block/ oil pump)

Oil pick up tube & oil pan were missing.

I would like to get the transmission, (or at least the bell housing).

I've pulled the timing covers, cylinder heads, etc....

Tried getting the crank to turn with my breaker bar, (4 foot pipe),.

No go

Soaked the cylinders in PB Blaster. Nothing.

Tapped the pistons with a 5 lb hammer,(see BFH). Nothing.

Anyone have any suggestions of how I might get this thing to turn?

Is it possible to pull an auto transmission without unbolting the torque converter from the flexplate?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

EDIT: I searched, but didn't come up with anything. (Wrong search terms perhaps?)

Also, its a '91 Q45. (Hence the reason for posting in this forum)

Hmmm. Hope you don't need the actual trans, as it may have suffered some heat-related damage while the engine was melting down.

I don't see why you couldn't just unbolt the trans and pull it - Why would you need the motor to turn?

My transmission is good, I just need the bellhousing for my manual project.

I've never pulled an automatic transmission without unbolting the torque converter from the flexplate first.

EDITED: Question was answered in previous post.

Thanks Hitman.

I've never had a Q45 trans. off but...

There is a spline shaft through the middle (for the input shaft) and then the outer "drive" with the two slots that drive the pump, that usually slides through a lip seal, Right?? I've never seen one that has bolts behind the converter holding it on. A look at the FSM should confirm this....

I would guess this trans. is put together the same way, it should pull off... but be prepared so it doesn't puke all over you.

Exactly what I'm thinking - it's gonna be messy but it should come right off.

Transmission has been drained and the convcerter shouldn't dump too much ATF. (Tomorrows gonna be a messy day)

squeefoo, AZhitman thanks for your replies.

As usual, NICO is a invaluable asset

Anlasak,Just pulled the transmission from my parts car recently. The biggest PITA was getting the 8 bolts off that hold it to the engine. Since the heads are off, this should be no problem. Otherwise it is very simple. There is a thin plate (flexplate?)that has to be unbolted as you pull it out from the engine, but it's no problem. If you plan on using the driveshaft, remember to pull the whole thing out of the rear of the transmission, don't unbolt the rubber coupling. Wish I would have known that. Two people make the job much easier.Paul

Which plate are you talking about?

Flexplate is basicly the flywheel on an automatic. The torque converter bolts to it via 4 bolts.

There is a lower cover plate held on by 6 bolts (+2 gussets) on the bottom of the bellhousing. Its the access port to unbolt the torque converter.

There is also a plate between the block and the bellhousing, but it should be held in place by the "transmission-to-block" bolts.

Like a separator/spacer?? Bolted to what? I think I've seen that while spacing out under the car, but took no significant note. Mine is still in the air so I'll have to take a good look at that tomorrow. Hmmmm

Anlasak,I recall a thin, kinda C shaped metal bracket or plate that we had to remove at some point. I think when we were removing the TC. Don't let my faulty memory screw you up . Trans is stored at my in-laws, next time I'm there I will look at it, probably not in time to help you though.

Bottom line, dropping the trans is not that difficult and was pretty self-explanatory once you get started. First one I've pulled and it went smoothly once it was unbolted from the block.Paul
