Sorry in advance if this has been posted before...
My little brother just bought a 2001 pathfinder with a blown transmission ($500!). The transmission oil pan is full of metal filings, so I'm confident that the problem lies there, as opposed to a differential or other drive component. We're looking to buy a used transmission and swap them. Anyone done this? Can you drop the transmission out from the bottom, or will we have to pull the engine? Obviously just getting started here so my questions are pretty general.
Thanks,
-Nick

See page AT-277 for the FSM's instructions. I have no personal experience to offer. I do suggest that when you install the new transmission that you get an in-line filter and an auxiliary transmission cooler to prolong the its life and hopefully avoid another blown trans.

honestly if he got a 2001 path for 500$ and its in good shape, regardless if you have to pull the engine on not, even if you do i think its worth spending the like 150 give or take for an engine puller and take the time to do it yourself even though its more of a PITA.

Also, hell he can fix it for under 2k and probably go trade it in for another car at the dealers for 7k easy lol.

I don't remember the particulars, but a couple of years ago Nissan announce that they were reimbursing everyone who had failed CVTs. I know because my Murano's transmission failed. Nissan really stepped up to the plate in my opinion. You should try to see if your vehicle was included. The program that Nissan announced covered previously paid for repairs for specific years. In addition, I think they also extended the warranty on the CVT units effected to 100,000 miles. It may be worth your time to check this out.
