I have a j30 with 194k on it. I'm the second owner and have the trans serviced several times.

1. It has recently started on going into 4th (OD) when it's cold and doing a weird thing after letting off the gas and re-applying the gas. It will cruise for a few seconds and then the rpms will go up slightly then back down- but not shifting...?

2. How can I tell if the trans torque converter is locking up? I've been searching on google with no luck.

3. I get a revolution trans error code. where is the rev sensor located? Do I have to drop the transmission

4. Would advance auto would be ok to get the revolution sensor from? (I know your answer :) )

Thanks for the help!
Brian

The rev sensor sits on top of the transmission. To reach it you'll have to drop the transmission a bit. The part is dealer only. I think that's what your problem is.

I've beenr reading different version of threads- some say on top, others say at the shaft?

Its on top. If you half small hands drop it part way. If you have large hands drop it all the way. The rev sensor is easy to see once the transmission is dropped.

Just to Clarify.
The "Rev" Sensor is on top of the transmission and the "Speed" sensor is on the tail shaft.
Correct ?

I re-checked the codes. The first time I checked the a/t codes I didn't realize that the light come on and pauses for 2 seconds then goes off and then it flashes. there are no codes given through the self diagnostics...

after a trans filter/ fluid change:

a. it doesn't want to go into o/d until the temp sens is at normal operating temp for at least 5 minutes.

b. if cruising and I let off the gas and then reapply gas, it will cruise fine and then 30 seconds later the rpms drop by 50.

I find these issues to be very wierd... If anyone knows anything- please let me know.

Thanks

Curious, What did the old transmission fluid look like?

Changing the transmission fluid and filter will actually make the problem worse, if the transmission has been neglected/under serviced.

The transmission on the J, was well known from when it was new, to hesitate or have clunky shifting till the transmission fully warmed up.

not on the net much. The old fluid was the same color as new. No metal in pan. The car has been maintained very well. I've had it for 130,000k and had the transmission done every 40,000 k

thanks
