I have a 2001 nissan Xterra 4x4...

Can someone tell me what the Check ball and check spring do in the transmission? If you look in the ESM, page 47 of 70 and the center image on page 48 of 70 in the MT.pdf.

The reason being, first gear went in my truck and I replaced the transmission. When I broke the transfer case from the transmission, the check spring came out. Where that spring belongs, there is NO possable way that spring could end up in that part of the transmission.

Just trying to figure out how that got in there and if it could have caused first to fail.

Thanks!

I do not have a ESM handy to look at but that spring is held down by the shifter plate, which you likely removed when you pull the trans out. during that process it probably came out of its bore and dropped down into the trans shifter hole which is the cavity the transfer case buts up against. I am assuming here this is the spring your talking about as I have them pop out on me quite abit.

I removed the snap ring and then removed the shifter and NOT the plate. The spring was in the case when I removed the transmission from the transfer case. Thats why I removed the plate and found no spring there. Do you think it could have been done at the plant?

is it possible a detent slid out from the side when you pulled the shifter out? and that was the spring you found?

Anything is possible at the plant. I have seen some goofy things come in on PDI. Btw the latest word I got is that nissan shut down the assembly lines It was presented as it might be all lines untill they can get a handle on quality control. This was heard last week and I didnt get all the details but it shows nissan is trying to correct errors like that from happening.

side note. i had a car with low milage come in for a nasty noise in the rear. i tore the whole rear of the car apart and found 3 beer cans on strings dangling inside the right rear quarter with a note saying something to the effect of how long did it take you to find this (insert cuss word).

I wouldnt even try to leave it to them I would call directly probably our feild engineer who deals with manufacturing quite regularly. I have his number at my disposale should we have a new model vehicle with a problem we are to call him directly. When I say we I mean myself or any of my techs that have the problem. hes the type of guy who wants to hear the problem stright from the horses mouth.
